Saaaaaaaammmmmm THE DEFINITIVE STATS FOR READING ON THE TELLY (well since 2008)

Since our relegation to the Football League in 2008, we have been on television a total of 41 times (excluding overseas broadcasts, playoffs and cup games)

It breaks down to...

Played: 41
Won: 14
Drawn: 13
Lost: 14
Scored: 59
Conceded: 52
Points Per Game: 1.3

However I think it's most interesting when it's looked at home and away...

Home: P24 W6 D9 L9 - 1.1 PPG (Championship Season = 50 Points)
Away: P17 W8 D4 L5 - 1.6 PPG (Championship Season = 73 Points)

Not only is there a large disparity in the split of home/away games picked for television (nearly 60% of our TV games are at the Madejski Stadium), there is an even bigger chasm in terms of results. With a home record of 1.1 PPG since 2008/09, it would give us just 50 points over the course of a Football League season. The last time we finished a campaign with less than 50 points was 1997/98, when we were relegated. Only twice in the last THIRTY seasons have we finished with less than that amount in a 46-game season, both seasons we finished BOTTOM of the league

In contrast, our away record of 1.6 PPG would have us with a season total of 73 points, NEVER have we reached the playoffs or been promoted with less points, and to give this record even more standing, we won the league with an away record of 1.8 PPG in 2011/12

And season by season...

2008/09 - Nine Games
P9 W4 D3 L2

2009/10 - Three Games
P3 W1 D0 L2

2010/11 - Four Games
P4 W1 D2 L1

2011/12 - Five Games
P5 W4 D1 L0

2012/13 - Eight Games (Premier League)
P8 W0 D2 L6

2013/14 - Five Games
P5 W1 D4 L0

2014/15 - Two Games
P2 W1 D1 L0

2015/16 - Three Games
P3 W1 D0 L2

2016/17 - Two Games (Incomplete)
P2 W1 D0 L1

Interesting facts...

- Despite broadcasting rights being shared amongst multiple channels in this time period, Sky Sports have broadcast 39 of the 41 games televised since our relegation in 2008 (Man Utd 2012/13 Home & Away - ESPN)

- In only two of our last nine seasons have we won more than ONE televised game

- Nigel Adkins won just one televised game (away to QPR Feb 2014), Steve Clarke lost just one (home to QPR Dec 2015), it got him sacked

- When we were beaten by QPR at home last season, it ended a run of FOURTEEN games unbeaten in televised Football League encounters, stretching back to another home QPR defeat in 2010/11, a run of 4 years 9 months, or 1763 days without witnessing a televised Championship defeat. We then immediately lost the next one just 13 days later (away to Hull Dec 2015)

- In between that run however, came a Premier League campaign in which we failed to win a single televised game, the only season that has happened. We also lost every televised game that season that wasn't against QPR (Sky broadcast a 1-1 away draw, followed by a 0-0 in the return fixture)

- FIVE of our last thirteen televised games have been against QPR (38%)

- In total we have played QPR on television EIGHT times in nine seasons, although only seven of those nine seasons were we in the same division. There have been ELEVEN goals scored in those eight games, with an aggregate of 5-6 in favour of QPR

- Basically, QPR QPR QPR

Serious effort there, thanks!! And yeah, QPR. What is the obsession?

One in every three of our televised games is against QPR  in fact it works out even more than that, and it's insane especially given how awful the matches have been. In those eight games only one has had over 2 goals (3-1 win at Loftus Road in 2014, a rare eventful game where Doyle scored against his former club and Gorkss was sent off against his, also this: https://youtu.be/FmuEbazl1AQ)

TV Opposition Breakdown 2008/09 - 2016/17 (41 League Games + 5 Playoff Games, 11 FA Cup Games, 1 League Cup Game):

QPR - 8
Leicester - 3
Southampton - 3
Burnley - 2 (+ 2 Playoff Games)
Man Utd - 2 (+ 2 FA Cup Games)
Birmingham - 2
Ipswich - 2
Leeds - 2
Norwich - 2
Watford - 2
Arsenal - 1 (+ 1 League Cup Game, 1 FA Cup Game)
Aston Villa - 1 (+ 1 FA Cup Game)
Crystal Palace - 1 (+ 1 FA Cup Game)
Brighton - 1 (+ 1 Feb 2017)
Charlton - 1
Coventry - 1
Derby - 1
Doncaster - 1
Hull - 1
Newcastle - 1
Nottingham Forest - 1
Tottenham - 1
Wolves - 1
Bradford - 0 (+ 2 FA Cup Games)
Cardiff - 0 (+ 2 Playoff Games)
Liverpool - 0 (+ 2 FA Cup Games)
Everton - 0 (+ 1 FA Cup Game)
Man City - 0 (+ 1 FA Cup Game)
Swansea - 0 (+ 1 Playoff Game)

That leaves the following teams that we have played since 2008/09, but have not been televised against (deep breath now)...

Barnsley, Blackburn, Blackpool, Bolton, Bournemouth, Brentford, Bristol City, Burton Albion, Chelsea, Everton, Fulham, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough, Millwall, MK Dons, Peterborough, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Preston, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, Sheffield Utd, Sheffield Weds, Stoke, Sunderland, West Brom, West Ham, Wigan, Yeovil
(+ Colchester, Crawley, Newport, Northampton, Stevenage, Torquay, Walsall)

TV Channel Breakdown 2008/09 - 2016/17 (41 League Games + 5 Playoff Games, 11 FA Cup Games, 1 League Cup Game):

Sky - 39 (+ 5 Playoff Games, 1 League Cup Game)
ESPN - 2 (+ 3 FA Cup Games)
BBC - 0 (+ 3 FA Cup Games)
ITV - 0 (+ 3 FA Cup Games)
BT Sport - 0 (+ 2 FA Cup Games)

Couple of other fun TV facts...

- With 4 games televised since the beginning of the 2007/08 season, Old Trafford is comfortably our most televised away ground in recent years

- Since 2008/09, we have only been televised once in the League Cup, the infamous 5-7 defeat to Arsenal (https://youtu.be/DmzohDd56ww). The only other televised Worthington/Carling Cup game was at home to Liverpool in 2007 (https://youtu.be/JNEPI78-8Do)

- Our home game with Manchester City in September 2006 (https://youtu.be/SPcnQszLdaA) was the first Reading match broadcast live in High Definition back in the day on Sky Sports HD1, our playoff final with Swansea in 2011 was the first Reading match televised live in 3D on Sky 3D, and the first three-dimensional broadcast at the Madejski Stadium was a 1-3 defeat to Spurs in September 2012. Finally, last Saturday's game with Manchester Utd was the first Reading match broadcast live in Ultra High Definition, on BT Sport 4K UHD

- Our FA Cup tie with Burnley in 2010 on FATV is the only competitive Reading match ever to be legally broadcast exclusively on the internet in the UK. The pre-season game against the Thai All-Stars last season was streamed live on YouTube via Thairath TV (https://youtu.be/92bbymbb-sA)

- The BBC showed 30 live Championship games from 2009-2012, however Reading were not picked on a single occasion

Absolutely excellent stuff. Can this be extended to include every game Reading have played live on TV in the UK?

While the first ever full league game taken live was, I believe, Reading 4-2 Wolves back on ITV in December 1994 wasn't their actual first live TV coverage way back in 1953 when the BBC covered the 2nd half of a friendly with Reims or something as an experiment in floodlighting?

Certainly think their first full live coverage in the UK was by SKY of FA Cup ties with Orient, Birmingham and Manchester City in 1991/1992(one of those being a last minute switch due to a postponement of a scheduled game elsewhere).

As to why QPR so often, well I presume SKY think it's a passionate local derby as we are similar teams wearing similar kits with a long history of games at the same level

Presumably we are televised against QPR so often because the games are so shit that everyone stays at home and watches it on TV instead, boosting the viewing figures.

And season by season...

2008/09 - Nine Games
P9 W4 D3 L2

2009/10 - Three Games
P3 W1 D0 L2

2010/11 - Four Games
P4 W1 D2 L1

2011/12 - Five Games
P5 W4 D1 L0

2012/13 - Eight Games (Premier League)
P8 W0 D2 L6

2013/14 - Five Games
P5 W1 D4 L0

2014/15 - Two Games
P2 W1 D1 L0

2015/16 - Three Games

2016/17 - Two Games (Incomplete)

Very nicely done - this season with overseas coverage we are W3 (Ipswich, Cardiff, Norwich) and L1 (QPR). We are 2/2 for games only shown abroad. So the plan should be to play on Saturdays and be picked as the live game for ex-UK coverage.

Over here it is on DAZN - which is essentially Netfix for live sport.
