potential to be a club legend!

Fair play to him signing even when there's uncertainty still behind the scenes!

Nameless
CountryRoyal Surely the current owners wouldn't be offering contracts out on terms that McCleary would likely accept at this stage in his career?

Maybe developments of less uncertainty about the takeover behind closed doors?

You could argue that it is low risk for them.
If the takeover goes through it's not their problem.
If it doesn't they have an asset with a much higher market value than if his contract had run down.
Possibly the biggest positive is that McCleary signed up. Financially I suspect he could have got a better deal by moving now or in the summer.

I'm not convinced he'd be that big a target. He's had his fair share of injury problems and this season is really the first he's been fully firing in two or three, and he's no spring chicken these days. Not in his twilight by any stretch, but in his peak and to get snatched up I think PL teams or big Chump sides would want to see more room to improve. Saying that, given some of the massively over inflated sales we've made, clubs are barking mad.

Good news but modern day football contracts are not worth more than toilet paper yet alone the paper that are signed on

Not in terms of the player staying, but it makes a massive difference to the potential transfer fee.

+1.

If we were to lose him in the summer, we'd get a sizeable transfer fee instead of nothing.

We'd get whatever his release fee is. I'm guessing a couple of million. But more than if he was a free agent.

Good news that we've tied down another of our key players on a longer contract.

I suspect that it's even better news for McCleary though. He'll have signed a decent contract that takes him up to the age of 32/33 and guaranteed himself a pretty fair wedge as a result. I'd imagine he's negotiated a pretty favourable release clause as well, just in case someone wants to offer him more money to warm a bench somewhere.

Good business all round though (unless we're committing too much for too long like we did with Roberts) as there was no point in the club risking losing him for nothing in the summer.
