Dave Kitson at the ex RFC players association thing

by leon » 16 Mar 2018 09:50

Don’t know if anyone else was there last night at the Tilehurst British legion (nice) but I was extremely impressed with Dave Kitson.

Extremely eloquent and quite a complex character, still clearly likes Reading.

I wanted to go but it was sold out.

Any interesting quotes or anecdotes?

Refused to confirm or deny whether he was TSF.

Wanted to stay at RFC but "couldn't afford" to have his wages halved after relegation so asked Nick Hammond for 3/4 wages. He said no so he got sold. Reckons we would have gone up with him in the team  Got to say I agree.

Loved Lita - says he was a nice guy his character contrary to his public image. Ivar was the real captain of the team behind the scenes - of all the 106 team he would still see all of them apart from Murty (but r8ed as a full back back) and Sidwell (interestingly not a fan of him at all)

Hates Pardew - with a passion, for slagging us off after he left and also basically being full of shit, (his words)

There was quite a bit Andy Hippo Hughes love - which was a surprise. Although the Amstel was kicking in at that point.

Wish I had gone to this. Sounded like a really good night.

Must look out for future events.

Never saw Quinn play, so I would say that Kitson was the most complete striker I have seen play for us.

Interesting, did he say why? I've heard comments about Murty in the past but not Sidwell.

Quinn was top drawer and far better IMO but that isn't taking anything away from Kitson who was excellent. Just Quinn was so good.

My Dad and Uncles always say that Quinn was the best, but slightly before my time (98-99 season) so unable to comment.

That 40 goal season of Quinny's was bloody amazing, you just knew he was going to find the back of the net. Some absolute pearlers in there as well. Great times on the Southbank.

Saw both - preferred Kitson not just because he carried the team during some poor times.

I went as well and thought he came across brilliantly.

The respect he had for Coppell was lovely to hear too. Coppell asked him when he joined, did he want an arm around the shoulder, regular bollockings etc and he said no, just wanted to be left alone to concentrate on his football. Only had 6 in-depth conversations with him during his time here, but the respect everyone within the team had for Coppell was immense. There would be silence whenever he spoke and he talking glowingly about his man-management, not just with the team, but the coaches (Kitson really, really rates Wally Downes), physios, scouts, general staff etc.

Also talked about his drink-driving incident. Totally apologetic for it, but he basically got half cut on Magners at Rileys, never tried it before, thought it just tasted like apple juice. Got annoyed with the barmaid who was chatting to her boyfriend on the phone, whilst he was trying to pay the bill. She got bollocked by her manager and she stitched up Kitson by telling the police he was drink driving.

Reading usually muster two consistent top class strikers in each decade

80s

Dixon and Senior

90s

Quinn and Morley

00s

Cureton and Kitson

10s

Le Fondre

Think all the above in their prime would struggle badly to score given the dreadful trouble the current bunch have to create anything

00's was a particularly successful period when you add the likes of Butler, Forster, Savage, Doyle & Long into the mix.

Can't w8 for next year when we see the second striker of the 10s

+1, although I didn't see Quinn at his peak for us

Great to hear some dribs and drabs of his talk.
