Peru or Denmark ?

Leaning towards Peru as I like their kit more and there’s the Paolo Hurtado factor.

On that France VAR penalty, I rather suspect the scenario is this:

Ref thinks the defender gets a big slice of the ball and attacker dives with no contact.

VAR checks it and discovers the initial touch on the ball is minimal and it's still very much there for the attacker to keep going with, and on top of that there is clear contact on the rear leg of the attacker which brings him down.

Therefore, ref's original decision that it was a good challenge and a dive is wrong, ref see's it (he isn't overruled) and decides that what he thought he saw happened isn't what actually happened and it should be a pen. Fairly quick decision, and a good call.

Iceland v Argentina game is more dodgy for VAR, with the original Argentina pen rather soft, and the one that wasn't given much more convincing.

So OK Ronaldo scored a great free-kick yesterday, a penalty and a goal from a goal keeping howler - other than that I didn't think he played that well. But from the way, the BBC are reporting on it, it's as if he had a 10/10 game ... or is it just me?

I thought he had a much better game than the Champs League final where he strutted around ineffectually. He still wasn't anywhere near the best player on the pitch against Spain (Isco - who was also way better in the Champions League Final), but he got a hat-trick and did play for the team - being let down by their young forward a bit.

He wasn't amazing, but he was better thank you make out. It's hard to argue with a WC hattrick

He was certainly better than he was in the Champs Final

He single handed handedly dragged Portugal through that match and, taking away the goals, was pretty much the only person on his team producing anything of quality.

Is that Cueva actually of English descent, only way I can explain the true awfulness of that penalty.

Justice was done, as I really can't fathom how that was deemed a penalty.

You had a play already going down, who, half a second before he actually hits the deck, manages to stretch a leg out enough to get a slight contact - and somehow that's deemed a foul.
