He had one great season for us and I remember fans at one time moaning that we had let Simon Cox go but had kept Shane Long.

Don't get me wrong I still think he'd be a great player at this level but I'd much prefer us to spend the money on Sam Gallagher. I see that Villa and Derby are after him and I don't understand why we can't be in the mix for a young player of his quality.

Snowball If Shane was just one year older would we think this transfer unlikely?

Interesting to compare him to Jason Roberts. The following is JR's total career
including his important contribution at Reading, when he was 33/34.

He didn't score a shed-load of goals but was very important to our promotion season

ROBERTS, CAREER

24,415 Minutes
346 Apps
089 Goals
3.88 Apps per goal
036 Assists
274.33 Minutes per goal
195 Minutes per goal/assist

Shane is 3-4 years younger, and barring serious injury, could give us 4-5 years.

IMO (tho it has no chance of happening) he would be perfect for the current side

LONG Career

24,493 Minutes
419 Apps
104 Goals
4.03 Apps per Goal
54 Assists
235.5 Minutes per Goals
196 minutes per goal/assist

Long is actually MORE experienced than Roberts was when he came to Reading
and he has 3-4-5 years left in him barring major injury.

I think the relevant point there is "barring major injury"
He has had injuries of late following on from the hear health scare when he was with West Brom.
A player who has a game centred upon hard running may well be a risky proposition.

Is he not a winger?

We are looking for a CF.

don't know that much about him, but he is 6ft 4 which would suggest not

Seems that a whole host of clubs are very keen on getting him in.

He looked very promising early on but his loan period doesn't seem to have improved him and presumably that is why Saints are prepared to let him go.

Burnely signing Chris Wood. So some of us can keep dreaming for a bit longer. Also presumably Leeds will be another rival in our striker hunt, although apparently they're in for Pierre Michel Lasogga.

If he goes to Brighton then Shane Long will be dead to me. I will even unfollow him on Twitter.

Was chatting to a guy who obviously knows Shane long well and he told me he wouldn't be at all surprised to see him back at Reading. He apparently loves the town and club. He believes if the club were interested then it could be a real possibility.

An Irish guy I play hockey with, also plays hurling with Shane's brother/cousin (I forget which), and they're quite good mates. I'll ask him and see if he can find out anything.

Southampton away at Huddersfield tomorrow. Not sure why he'd be travelling to the opposite end of the country just to visit family the day before a game

Maybe he's on his way to Huddersfield, and his wife's on her way to Reading with the kids.

Can she play up front?

Predominantly a winger, but can play there if needed.

In that case I think we should bid for Mrs Beric, who apparently is two footed and has predatory box skills.
