Meaningless Stats and Trivia from 2017/18 - 1

by strap » 12 May 2018 15:37

Well the sun disappeared almost as soon as I'd suggested I would start this thread when I got bored and the weather turned, so here we go.

First off is a look at our goal attempts this season, and see if any conclusions whatsoever may be drawn. During the season I have copied the Press Association text match "commentaries" that are provided by the BBC and Sporting Life, and regularised each entry to allow them to be manipulated into something a bit more useful. If the image below is too large to be fully visible I think it is possible to right click on it and download it as a JPG, which I am told cannot be tampered with by nasty hackers, so you should be safe to do so if so inclined.

What struck me immediately was that Sone Aluko had more shots this season than anyone else. The issue of course is that only 5% of his shots resulted in goals. Also of interest was Joseph Mendes having a shot every 30 minutes he was on the field, with Sam Smith just behind on a shot every 37 mins. Bodvarsson and Kermorgant were 3rd in that list at a shot every 40 minutes.

I only have this data for the last 2 seasons, so added the summary from 2016/17 as comparison. Kermorgant last season had a total of 112 shots and was on the field for 3556 minutes, giving a minutes per shot ration of 31.75 mins.

No agenda to push here, merely summarising information to while away the non-football months.

Nice work Strap. Impressive stats but it just highlights how crap we really were. Sack the lot of them and let's start again.
In all my years supporting the Royals, this has been by far the most depressing and frustrating season...

Thought I'd update this for the season just gone. Based on the PA text commentaries over the season, Andy Yiadom committed the most fouls in our League and Cup games with 60. Meite was second on 45, and Swift 3rd on 40. Strangely, (if PA is to be believed), Yiadom was also our most fouled player with 73, Ronomhota second on 62 and Meite third on 53.

I should qualify these by adding minutes on the pitch, so will do that shortly, but thought it interesting in absolute terms that Yiadom was top of both lists.

Rhino played, what, 18 games and picked up about four fouls per game.

Sounds like oppose realised he had to be stopped!

Not that surprising really.

Dribblers are fouled. Yiadom is a dribbler. (as in he runs with the ball, not that he's constantly drooling)
Tacklers foul. Yiadom is a tackler.

According to whoscored.com Yiadom averaged 2.3 tackles per game, and 1.5 fouls. Making the horrible generalisation that his fouls were attempted tackles, that means that 60% of his tackles were successful, and the other 40% unsuccessful. Of course, that ignores the "tackles" that got neither man nor ball.

For comparison.
Blackett: 1.6T, 1.1F - 59% success rate
Gunter : 1.2T, 0.9F - 57% success rate

Honestly, I would have expected the success rate difference to be more - instinctively I'd have thought Yiadom was a considerably better tackler than the other two. Maybe I just remember more successful ones, because there were more (volume-wise)....

First one, just a detailed summary of the season, "a la Rothmans"

You might have to right click and save image to see it fully?

Feel free to point out any errors.

Now a bit more detail on fouls committed by RFC - league matches only though, so I was wrong to say inclusive of Knock-out cups in the earlier post.

As ever, feel free to correct as necessary.

Next up some nonsense about our goal attempts, later in the week .. or next.

Rino has a real habit of inviting pressure, sometimes through a loose first touch, other times just showing the ball and then getting his body in between ball and challenge. Often he used it to slip a pass away or roll his man, quite often it got him a foul.

Looks a little ungainly and unauthodox at times, but it worked!
