Slough away or fulham at that place in hampshire

by Sutekh » 13 Jul 2018 14:37

Youngsters at Slough at 12.45pm and oldsters at the Rec at 1.30pm

Anyone arsed enough to go to either? Thinking the game at Slough might well be the most attractive to fans.

If they'd thought it out right they'd have set the kick off times so you could get to watch both but then the "attraction" of the utterly pointless game between England and Belgium probably put an end to that.

Anyway, all new signings should get a game at the Rec, though whether it's an attempt at a proper team or just the same problem ridden team for each half remains to be seen.

And then the main squad flies off to Austria for two games against actually quite decent (& the best) oppostion we've got this preseason. At least both of those games (Tuesday evening and next Saturday) are supposedly going to be on BBC Berks.

According to the club website the games are scheduled for Tuesday K.O. 18.00 and FRIDAY K.O. 16.00 (both UK times).
BBC Berks schedule shows the Tuesday match has commentary, but not Friday,s game. But, of course there may be a commentary on IFollow.

Off to the Rec. Interested to see how the starting 11 line up and what tactics are employed. More interesting than a rather pointless play off fixture. In which Southgate might as well let the reserves have a run out again.

However, third (bronze) being the best that we can ever hope for (and therefore becoming the new first) I’m all for a day in the sun...c’mon ingerlund
Then rioting afterwards...regardless of the result.....ah.......ok..

Team against Fulham looks to me like PC’s current first 11.

3 games in a row up front for Meite, must surely be in his plans.

No Popa at all though - little suprised but possibly Ill/injured

Yeah, Clement did favour him over Richards when available last year

No changes at half time would suggest that is the potential first 11 as well

I think he is suspended for the first game though isn’t he?

No Edwards or Harriott either noticeably

Much better from Reading In Hampshire. Couldn’t tell which side was in the PL nor in the Championship. Gave as good as they got and created more or less as much as Fulham.

Meite tries really hard as a CF and had his moments, certainly has much more of a presence about him than Smith or Bodvarsson and can hold the ball up as well produce a trick or two. Not convinced entirely about his pace or really if he is a goal scorer type of CF but then when the rest of the team struggle to create anything anyway it’s not surprising.

Swift seemed a bit more lively and more like the player we know he can be, McNulty only got about 20 minutes so not really enough to assess him but he certainly didn’t look off the pace or out of his depth. Other than that a good solid TEAM performance.

Overall the team also seemed a lot fresher, borne out by an hour for the “first XI”, but PC said as much after as he said the first couple of weeks they’d been on double session training which contributed to the rather weary performances at Eastleigh and Wimbledon and only pulled that back in this last week.

And the u23s beat Slough 3-2

Finally, the club are apparently hoping to tie up another signing in the next week or so and Bodvarsson will join up with the squad in Austria on Wednesday.

Thinks he's had a look at Popa and decided to offload.

Not the case, least not at the moment, Popa has a minor injury.

It was a better performance than I’d been expecting. Agree with the comments about the first XI. Meyler is a proper big unit. He seemed to be a good influence on Kelly who I thought showed well today. Meite should have scored at least one - was sure the effort midway through the first half was in, but got headed off the line.

We still made a number of basic errors, giving the ball away too cheaply. And we lack quality up front and on the wings. Barrow flattered to deceive - a lot of threat but poor end product. Aluko was his usual drifting inside self. I do like the look of Pelle Clement. Played left mid when he came on, couple of great turns and a good driving run which he couldn’t finish. Definite potent there.

Of the other new signings. I liked the looked of Yiadom. Gunter has a job on his hands to start regularly. O’Shea was pretty composed but you don’t want him isolated one on one too often. McNulty looked like he picked up a thigh strain. Needs to up his work rate - was blowing pretty hard after 20 minutes.

Against opposition that moved the ball crisply (for the first 60). The team was well organised and disciplined. If I was a Fulhan fan I would be concerned as to where the cutting edge is.

Squad has been drilled well for corners. Everybody knew their position in a zonal system.

Meite needs support up front. Bulked out since I last saw him play. Has a physical presence. Made the one on one with the keeper through sheer perserverance. Can see why he's higher up the pecking order than Smith.

A number of poor passes and lack of releasing the ball quickly enough.

Looks like we are going to have a very workman like side this season. Middle table beckons. Unless we add a couple of players with pace and creativity.

For the first 60 minutes both teams could have been starting 11's.

Fulham desperately need a centre forward.

Not sure how effective Cairney is going to be either.

Certainly wasn’t a lot between the teams at this stage of pre season

I guess now Mitrovic has left that makes a lot of sense ... sure they'll sign someone.

Good to see him improving. For a long time I just couldn't see what he offered. He didn't seem creative, nor able to defend. He didn't cross or look likely to score, nor break up play.

It wasn't that he did things badly. It was more that he didn't seem to really do anything.
