The Football League Thread 18/19

by Sanguine » 06 Aug 2018 09:17

Well, that was fun, wasn't it?

Some last minute shenanigans at the Madejski set the tone for the weekend. Sunderland scored a 96th minute winner against Charlton from a messed up corner routine - he received a corner on the edge of the area only to miss his kick and fall over. When he got up he realised he wasn't marked, and drifted into the back post to bullet in a header from the resulting cross. Brilliant.
Boring though compared to Swindon, who were 2-1 at home to promoted Macclesfield entering the 95th minute, and proceeded to win two penalties, and the game, 3-2.

Yan Dhanda not a name on many people's lips in the Championship - 19 year old released by Liverpool at the end of the season scored Swansea's 85th minute winner at Sheffield United with his first touch in professional league football.

Joey Barton lost his first game as Fleetwood Town manager, 1-0 at home to AFC Wimbledon, and Salford City drew their first game at National League level, 1-1 at home to Orient.

You could see from the performance he has the respect of the players already which is a huge plus.

His post match interview was a work of art.

Apparently one of his first acts as manager was to get the first team squad to collect rubbish for three hours, to understand how much work people do to buy a football ticket. He's renowned for being a bit 'different', but looked to have done the job yesterday.

Maybe the fixture list handed them an unfortunate start but Sheffield Utd losing their opening 2 games conceding 5 goals seems a surprise to me. I would have picked them as one of the teams fighting hard around the edge of the play offs this season

Leeds are looking very decent against Derby, dominating, looking like they're playing for fun. Currently 3-1 up and could be more

It may be their season? Or will they fall apart again in December?

Not worth a separate League Cup thread, but following their win on penalties last night, Macclesfield Town have now won all 8 of the shoot-outs they have contested. Which surely has to be some sort of record.

Bit of a scare for West Ham last night. Ardley should take huge credit for what he has done at AFC Wimbledon.

And Saido Berahino scored his first goal for 913 days.

Cracking OG last night in the Stoke v Huddersfield game too, worth the price of admission alone.

Oh hang on a second, he's even gone down the feigning injury route at the end to try and mask the shame! Didn't know that. Makes it even better.

Could be worse, I hear they’ve taken to locking people in at the Mad Stad during games.

Well, all it took was injury and suspension for Hernández and Roofe and they go from untouchable to dropping 9 points in a month.

It happens every single year to them. New manager and go top afrer 6 or so games. Everybody including Sky start Jizzing over them. They then revert back to type and choke, manager gets sacked by Christmas and it starts again.

I don't think they're choking as such, more that their style of play revolves around 2 players and both have been unavailable for the past month. They have no depth and the way Bielsa teams play, they will blow up when key players are not playing.

It's no different to Mourinho always blowing up in the third season, Bielsa teams always go out like a rocket then run out of gas.

High drama at Blundell Park in the early season 6 pointer in League 2 this weekend - Morecambe showing superb character to come from behind against Grimsby. Really difficult times for the Mariners this season you feel, after a narrow escape last season.
