26th January 2010 - Close comparison to current season

by Schards#2 » 13 Jan 2019 16:06

26th January 2010 - Sheffield United 3-0 Reading

Here's the match report which also incorporates the league table after the game:

http://www.royals.org/matdoc/260110.html

23 points from 26 games, 23rd in the table and a new manager trying to find the right combination. We won the next game, won 9 of the next 11 and finished 9th.

As this shows, and as Hull are showing this year, in The Championship, if you click and get some momentum, it is quite possible to go on a lengthy winning run as every game in this league is winnable. Was Swansea the lowest point after which, like in 2009/10, we turn the corner and don't look back?

Yesterday we didn't just win, everything felt different in the approach and attitude. here's hoping.

Let’s hope so. I have been watching a review of the 2011/12 season today and we had a fantastic second half of that season too. So we have recent history showing that things can be turned around. There is more than enough talent in this squad for them to be doing so much better.

Thorvaldsson oxf*rd me that's a name I don't recognise, even seeing his name I don't even remember his existence from that season.

I'm fairly certain he never existed. I can't even vaguely remember him.

Wasn't he Ingimarsson's cousin? I cannot remember him playing at all, but I vaguely remember talk about him coming on loan.

Correct.

We arranged the loan under Rodgers, who didn't rate Long (or Kebe) but when McDermott came in it was a different matter.

We've had eleven different Icelanders under professional contracts - two cousin and two brothers.

For my birthday (that very day) my Uncle/Dad came and picked me up on the way to Sheffield to watch that dross. The previous occasion we’d done something football specific for my birthday was when they arranged for my name to be on the screen at HT against Bristol Rovers.........As you can imagine, I was mightily relieved that Bolton got moved off the 26th....

I thought all Icelanders were at least cousins

There are only 48 people on the island, right?

Looking at the season on wikipedia. Christ the first half of that is dire viewing.

Trying to remember what games I watched

Sheffield Weds in early December
Liverpool on TV in a backstreet bar in Milan, then the replay with rabidbee. Getting called Cockneys in a pub around from the stadium.
Was the Doncaster away game on TV? Definitely watched one in a packed 6 nations pub, to the bemusement of all.
I watched one of the WBA FA cup games as a stream while in my office, archie's penalty must have been invoLOLved somewhere.

Villa game, half time, "if we can avoid conceding early, we have a chance here"

oh.
