Re: Eleven Years Ago Today

A shocking performance. We capitulated. One of the rare occasions when I left before the final whistle.

Re: From the halcyon days of Spring 95

That was the only game I missed that season because I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to a wedding. Not a bad one to miss.

Re: What is the biggest attendance you were a part of?

I was one of the record crowd at Palace - 51,801 v Burnley '79
I was one of the (then) record crowd at Aldershot - 16,500 v us in '66
63,007 at Highbury for cup replay against Derby in '73
92,000 at Wembley for England v Argentina '80
100,000 at Wembley for Spurs v QPR cup final '82

Re: Sheffield Wednesday prediction thread

We desperately need a spawny 1-0 win from a one-yard bobbler off someone's shin. So 0-1 (Doyler 87" - one-yard bobble off the shin).

Re: If we don't go up....

I am torn... If we do go up, I think next season will be catastrophic and we could end up doing a 'Derby'. This current side is not even in the same solar system as 05/06 and to make the squad competitive in the Prem will take major surgery and will cost more bunce than Coppell and Mr Mad will ever ...

Federici Armstrong Doobs BIKEY Rosenior S Hunt Cisse (Tabb) Matejovsky Kebe Doyle N Hunt (I'd like to see SHunt and Kebs playing because if they pull 2/3 defenders them Matejovsky will have a field day feeding through balls to NHunt and Doyle) Like to see Tabb have a start but too much to expect tw...

Re: What's the most obscure Reading match you have been to?

Crewe vs Reading on a Friday night in the early 80s (maybe 83 or 84?). Absolutely tipping down all the way there, and a massive smash on the M6 meant the supporters club coaches didn't get there until well after kick-off - I was driving and missed the first 5 minutes. Can't remember the result - I ...

Re: What's the most obscure Reading match you have been to?

I doubt if a standard league match could be described as obscure but I do remember being in the 631 at Moss Rose to see Reading play Chester. I was working in Stoke for a couple of days and I met up with Ark Royal who had been in Leeds. For real obscurity I have to go for a friendly between Malaga ...

Re: Was this the best game ever?

in all seriousness the 4-3 at home to Plymouth in the 80's was by far the best game, especially seeing as we were 0-3 down. Absolutely - especially since I know at least three people that left at 0-3. I remind them EVERY time I see them. The 3-3 draw At Sheff Utd later that same season was pretty g...

Re: Paul Canoville.

I had a chat with Canoville on the club holiday to Spain in '87. A really, nice genuine bloke who was in no way bitter about the dreadful injury he suffered. The scar on his leg was terrible to behold.

Re: Nostalgia time - pix from the 78/79 Championship season

Thanks for the pics Ark Royal, superb. The Wimbledon home game which clinched the title was my first ever game,John Alexander scored the goal in a 1 - 0 win. Surely Port Vale away was the title clincher? A vintage season with that Grimsby game one of the most memorable, being a top of the table clash...

Re: Was this the best game ever?

Reading 4 Plymouth 3 in '85 Tranmere 1 Reading 3 in '95 I remember seeing us on the tv and you were having the biggest tug ever on a fag with about 5 minutes to go (Tranmere). Baz, have to agree with those two. The most amazing of comebacks coupled with the most complete performance. And Tranmere d...

Re: Was this the best game ever?

Agreed. I spoke to Shaka Hislop at a Berks v W Indies cricket match that summer and he said that three or four Reading players including himself had to have pain-killing injections at Wembley. The others were Oz, Andy Bernal and Dariusz IIRC. Even so, that ranks as the best away performance from a ...

Mad Dog's Ghost Great stuff.

Went to a couple of games that season.

Any chance of doing the same with the 78-79. My first proper season.

Cheers!

Re: Was this the best game ever?

Think I agree about the Tranmere play-off game being the best particularly given the importance of it. They won 20-odd home games that season as well. Problem was in the home leg they kicked us off the park and several players carried injuries into the final which told late in the game. Agreed. I s...
