Re: England - the future....

For the third time, 'VARIANCE' Say Man Utd make it to the FA Cup final would I rather they play the stronger Man City or the weaker Chelsea Or switching it around would Man City rather play Man Utd or Coventry in the final? If we are rating teams we may use some exponential weighting on the latest ...

James Tavernier now the highest scoring defender in British football history, he's on 131 goals (in 572 appearances), mostly for Rangers.

Re: England - the future....

Come on, you surely can't dispute that first run to the semi's was about as easy a route as you could get. England played Sweden in the QFs essentially because Germany lost to South Korea in the group stage. I don't buy the 'easy route' stuff. If you don't play someone because they've already gone ...

Re: England - the future....

No my point is with a little more attacking intent Italy were there for the taking. Watching it live at the ground, it was incredibly frustrating. Football isn't played in isolation like that. A bit more attacking intent might have seen us lose to the odd goal in another three, with the skilful Ita...

Re: England - the future....

It’s quite a similar situation with West Ham under Moyes who have been superb in his four years in charge, yet the majority of West Ham fans want him gone because they’re bored of their style. It may be a fair argument in isolation but when people start finding excuses for their success, it sort of...

Re: Weekend Football

And the PL title race takes another turn, now Liverpool have the slight advantage. Next week's games Wed Arsenal v Luton Man City v Villa Thu Liverpool v Sheff Utd Sat Palace v Man City Brighton v Arsenal Sun Man Utd v Liverpool Think Liverpool’s season will be defined by those three away games in ...

Re: Ups & Downs 23/24

It is mathematically possible for a Championship side to reach 100 points this season and not be promoted. Max points - Leicester 106, Ipswich 105, Leeds 104. A record will surely go though - the most points accumulated by a side that failed to win promotion in the EFL is 90, held jointly by Sheffie...

He got extremely lucky with the draws in both tournaments Teams are always shit once England beat them, right? Re: England - the future....

Again, you are defining 'easier' by ranking, when one of the higher ranked sides, Spain, only avoided England because they couldn't beat Sweden or Poland in the group stage. If they couldn't beat Sweden or Poland, why would they have been tougher opposition for England?

Re: England - the future....

We probably don't need to play any matches then in June. Just award the title to France. England only played Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi finals because Croatia topped a group that included Argentina, and because Russia beat Spain in R16. The Ukraine game at the Euros only happened because Spa...

Re: Euro 2024

A couple of France 'stats'. First - I was amazed to read that William Saliba is not a regular starter for the team. He is immense for Arsenal. Second - by the time of the Euros, Didier Deschamps will be approaching 12 years in charge of the French national side, which is inside the top 20 for longes...

Steph Houghton announces her retirement from football. A true English legend of the game. And her biggest battle yet to come, as she supports her husband Stephen Darby through his battle with MND. I'd missed that Marcus Stewart - who has just completed a charity walk alongside Houghton and Darby - a...

Re: England - the future....

Thing is, given the general negative reaction to us losing a football match by a single goal to Brazil, it's hard to imagine that had Southgate played a few more inexperienced players and we'd been thrashed 5-0, he'd have been criticised for that, too. Fwiw, having seen some of the 'highlights pack...

Re: England - the future....

Agreed on Sterling. He is also a very direct player, moves quickly with the ball, something we don't have a lot of - although Foden is doing this more and more. That said - I guess the likes of Bowen and Gordon are in the squad for exactly this. As an aside - it's remarkable how quickly the 'Southga...

Re: Euro 2024

So if we get out of the group we play the third-placed team from group D, E or F. There is a formula based on which combination of third-placed teams make it through to R16. In the QFs we would play the runner-up from either group A or B - means we are likely to face Italy or Spain, assuming Hungary...
