report Reading took another big step towards confirming promotion to the Premiership by securing a point at second placed Sheffield United. The draw saw Reading retain their twelve point margin over their nearest rivals, and confirm their status as the team set to collect the Championship trophy at the end of the season. This was an excellent result for the Royals, but it could have been even better for Reading if Dave Kitson had converted his last minute penalty. Right at the death Reading might have snatched the win after Bobby Convey was taken down in the area by the United keeper, but he saved the spot-kick to ensure the points were shared. The draw was probably the right outcome after both sides might have grabbed the decisive second goal.

Both of the games goals came early on, and the goalscoring was completed with twelve minutes on the clock. United took the lead when a clever pass saw Dyer score from twelve yards out. Three minutes later, and Reading were back level when Convey did well down the wing to cross for Kitson in the middle. Kitson, starting in place of Leroy Lita who was ruled out after an incident in a Bristol nightclub on Monday, had a straight forward finish from close range to make it 1-1. The home side then enjoyed the better of the play but struggled to convert their chances. Marcus Hahnemann was once again in fine form in the Reading goal with a string of good saves to keep the scores level. United will feel they should have moved ahead after a couple of nervous moments for the Reading defence before hacking the ball clear.

After the break Steve Sidwell had a good header from close range on target that was well saved as Reading looked to move ahead. A frantic second half saw the Reading defence busier but remaining strong, although they had some poor finishing to thank from the home side who hit a couple straight at Hahnemann and one clear over the bar when they should have hit the target. The last minute penalty could have seen Reading practically confirm the title, but we were spared a Warnock explosion by the keeper's impressive save.

I thought Kitson put it wide?

Nah, Kits hit it too straight and Kenny beat it away out to the edge of the box.

That was me and my girlfriend's first date.

Pretty romantic I thought, top of the table clash and all.

Nice symmetry to go back for the 5-year-anniversary then.

Blimey, were we already on 83 points by 14 February? I remember still absolutely refusing to admit that we would be promoted even when we played Preston at the end of that month! If any other team had that many points in February you'd be certain they were already up, but when it's your own club....

Oh, and I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for this, but could they not have just waited until Saturday night to confirm a date? If we'd have both been knocked out of the cup we could have played it on Saturday 29th January, when the 4th round games are scheduled for. I can't imagine I'm alone in wanting it to have been a weekend game rather than Tuesday night.

Or would it have been too late notice?

Strange decision by the clubs..Why couldn't they wait to confirm this next week? There's a possibilty both teams could be knocked out of the FA Cup and if that happened this game could be played on a Saturday...

I've just seen what you wrote Croydon..

I think it was the date when we were effectively promoted wasn't it? I know we didn't know it then, but I don't think the third placed team got more than 83 points.

Cheers, I was a bit lashed up that night after bowling around Sheffield singing "champione champione ole ole ole" for most of the day

That night gave birth to one of the best songs I've heard Reading fans sing...

"You can stick your valentines up your ar$£,
I've come to watch the Royals cos they're class,
She wanted to go to dinner,
So I had to bin her,
And Neil Warnock takes it up the ar$£
UP THE AR$£!

I said Neil Warnock takes it up the ar$£..."

There are a number of obvious reasons if you do a bit of digging, but the long and short of it is Sheffield Wednesday:

1) Sheffield Wednesday v Tranmere Rovers is scheduled for the Saturday of FA Cup 4th Round day.

2) Sheffield Wednesday are also still in the FA Cup, playing Bristol City at Ashton Gate I believe. If they go out then resort to 1). If they draw then the notice of scheduling is too short after the outcome of the replay. If they win then there is a 50/50 chance they will be drawn at home.

3) Given the numerous different outcomes of both Sheff Utd and Reading's ties this weekend, the mere practicality of scheduling the game away from the FA Cup AND Sheffield Wednesday's fixtures is the easiest and most practical option.

£10 a pop, they can't change it having charged that for the original fixture.

If you've got a ticket and can't make the rearranged fixture then you can get a refund from RFC.
