Team for Donny

by Ian Royal » 11 Sep 2011 17:14

TBH I think we need a change of shape more than anything, we're predictable and too easily over-run from midfield. It's also too easy to shut our attacks down by doubling up on wingers.

I'd like to see this please:

...............Federici
Shaun....Pearce..Gorkss....Mills
..........Jem........Howard
...............McAnuff
...Kebe.....................HRK
..............Le Fondre

McCarthy, Leigertwood, Manset, Hunt, Harte

Just as happy with Legs in Howard's position, but he's been really quite poor so far. Also happy with Howard, or Hunt in McAnuff's position. HRK gives more of a goal threat from outwide than McAnuff.

Play it on the deck mainly. Plenty of passing ability and creativity in that side, plus a packed midfield to protect the defence. May still struggle to score, but less likely to conceed and we need to steady the ship.

With the winger's tucked in, more as forwards, it makes the other team have to decide whether to tuck in full backs to pick them up and leave space down the flank for our full backs or McAnuff drifting wide into space, or hope the centrebacks / midfield can track their runs. They can also dart out into the channels to receive the occaisional hoof / pull defenders to the wings opening up a hole through the middle for Howard, McAnuff, or Karacan to play a through ball / run into.

This is the problem. Le Fondre not really a lead the line striker either from what I've seen, but he does know where the net is and in theory HRK and Kebe are both about 10 goals a season players if they get 35-40 games.

But the alternatives are Manset, who's a bit clumsy and ponderous, Church who's not confident infront of goal and Hunt who's a all energy and not a lot else.

Then again maybe we just need to put out the same team for 3 or 4 games in a row and see if they can build something as a whole. Tinkering every game isn't going to do us a lot of good.

Definitely agree that Howard needs to be brought in. The centre is lacking in creativity and although he does have he downsides, the one thing he can do is pick a pass and hes not afraid to shoot

------------------------Feds---------------------

Cummings --- Gorkss --- Khumalo --- Mills

---------------Tabb ------ Jem----------------

McAnuff-----------Howard-------------- HRK

--------------------Le Fondre------------------

Subs: McCarthy, Legs, Kebe, Obita, Manset/Church.

Feel Tabb and Howard deserve a chance. Legs and Kebe need a kick up the backside after yesterday to show them that they aren't guaranteed a place in the starting 11. Robson-Kanu seemed interested when he came on and actually wanted to play. Would even be tempted to start Church but he doesn't seem to be the man to play up top on his own, but he has a point to prove.

Federici
Cummings
Pearce
Gorkks
Mills

Taylor
Howard
Karacan
Gunnarsson
HRK

Hunt (if fit - Church if not)

We need to win the midfield battle so a retrun to 4-5-1 would give us a platform. Kebe, McAnuff, Leigertwood and Griffin offered nothing yesterday and I think we have to give younger players a chance - Taylor on the right. Gunnar has never let us down in a crisis before.

Kinda in despair knowing who or what formation to play.

There doesn't any obvious in any shape or form anymore.

I would probably be more in agreement with Ian's suggestion than anything else, except replace Pearce with Morrison. Maybe even Gunnarsson (to add some experience/cool headedness back there).

Tabb in for Karacan. Karacan looked aimless and clueless out there yesterday.

Leighertwood is doing exactly as anticipated. Bugger all since he got his permanent deal under his belt. Looked like he didn't give a damn yesterday.

One thing that has passed me by, but is Hunt really injured again?! That bloke is the biggest p*ss taker we have ever had.

In theory I think this team would really work but we can't just change the style of football we play overnight. For a long time we've needed someone working the channels and winning flick-ons and ALF just isn't that player and I don't think any of our forwards are capable as a lone striker.

A message to all those sticking McAnuff in as the attacking midfielder. An attacking midfielder needs to be able to shoot. That counts out McAnuff.

His shooting has improved, but agreed it's not good enough to be used as a goalscorer for that position. But it's less important if you have goalscoring wide players who can cut into the box. McAnuff is there to be creative and play others in, as well as keeping defenders on their toes because he isn't too shy about shooting either. That's the thought anyway.

We seem to do best when we play a 4-5-1 variant against Donny.

A-Fed

Cummings
Pearce
Gorkss
Mills

Karacan
Tabb

McAnuff
Taylor
Obita

Manset

Subs: McCarthy, Griffin, Legs, Kebe, Le Fondre.
Next match, drop one of Tabb and Karacan for Le Fondre, and stick with that team unless Obita or Taylor looks massively out of their depth, or one of the full backs isn't good enough, or Feds stops looking like he deserves to be first choice.
