That's a high risk signing. Six months out with a groin strain thrown into a championship promotion battle.

we were tracking him when he was on loan at huddersfield last season and were trying to line this up before roberts pulled his hamstring. it all points to church and (to keep the peace) le fondre not being good enough if we were still after another striker.

afobe has good feet and pace. i would have liked someone more experienced, but in mcdermott we trust.

Nothing wrong with taking a punt on someone young and talented. Bit of pace of upfront wouldn't go amiss either

If he is good enough for RVP he is good enough for me!

Robin van Persie says Benik Afobe can pick up from where he left off after the youngster’s recovery from a long-term injury.

A serious groin problem suffered in pre-season meant a six-month spell on the sidelines for Afobe but he made a goalscoring return in the Reserves’ 5-0 victory over Norwich last week.

The 19-year-old was involved in Arsène Wenger’s first team last summer and Van Persie believes he has all the ingredients to have a big career.

“I was delighted to see Benik come back in the Reserves last week, scoring against Norwich,” Van Persie told the Official Matchday Programme.

“Six months is a long time out at his age, especially when he did really well with the first-team over pre-season and was making fast progress.

“He has returned impressively though - I watched him in training last week while I was doing my warm-down and he looked really strong and quick, a proper English striker who holds the ball up well and works very hard.

“When you are young you just want to be playing, improving your game and making your career, and he was denied that for a long time.

“To come back as he has done is tremendous - he is a fantastic lad, a really good character to have in the squad and a player I genuinely rate, so I’m really proud of him.

“He absolutely loves his football and treats it very seriously. That is the main thing for a young footballer - if you really love the game like he does then you will make it, and he has everything to become a great player.”

We have youngsters in the same age bracket as this lad who ate supposedly shit hot, so really don't get this. Unproven and can't be coming in to be in the starting 11 can he?

19 years old and 5 goals in 28 appearances on loan at Huddersfield in 2010/2011, bit :| at this as I can't really see him being better than what we have due to lack of experience and a slight ? over his fitness.

But then if he has lightning pace and has a good start - assuming he comes here - then who knows.

I see what your saying. Dominic Samuel has been banging 20+ goals in a season for over 2 seasons now. Why not give him a crack over another youngster from a big name club?

Huddersfield media really rate the kid though. Something like 8 goals and 10 assists when on loan there last season!

Probably because a loan signing will feel less pressure than a youngster (Samuel) to come in and perform for his team that are vying for promotion.

Just my take on it, anyway.

(Sheppard can't be that close to fitness then...)

From what I've seen of Samuel, he didn't look ready for playing against men. Throwing him in to do a job for the first team would be a hell of an ask, whereas this lad from Arsenal looks more developed and has of course already played league football and done ok.

I watch a couple of interviews with him on You Tube and he sounds like he's got his head screwed on right, and looks a handful from the clips of him playing. I wanted us to sign a Roberts type player for the know how and experience he'd being to our front line (and te results have shown it was needed) so I'm not convinced this is quite the signing we need.

Sheppard came back and picked up a minor injury. Wont be out long but I doubt we'll see him this season.
