Thing is, Hurlock could play. Mick Tait always got there as quick as he could though  Both of them old school and from a time long gone. I did go pint for pint once with Hurlock. 15 minutes and 5 pints each later I whimped out.

SpaghettiHoop Couldn't think of a really hard gk

It is difficult but I reckon Feds may well have a pretty hard streak to him. Also, I suspect that Steve Death may have been far harder than his diminuitive size would suggest. Bibbo?

Agreed. Hurlock was not only nails and terrifying to behold, he could really play as well. He was one of the best players at that level when we signed him (for a then club record fee) and he was the final piece in the jigsaw that saw us win the title in 86. He also made the PFA team that season as a Brentford player.

I was gutted when he was sold the following season. I think there were 'internal reasons' and maybe a bust-up with Branfoot? If you look at Hurlock in photos at the time, he is never smiling and looks really pissed off all of the time.

One thing for sure, he was genuinely scary. At the celebration night at The Majestic on the Caversham Road, I got every player to sign my invite - except Hurlock. He was leaning up against a bar, totally alone, undoubtedly hammered and I nervously approached to ask him for his autograph. He just gave me the thousand-yard stare that did not words to accompany it and I turned on my heels and walked away.
