25 man PL squad rules for January.

by andrew1957 » 12 Jan 2013 10:47

I just had a thought about this with the signings of Carrico and Kelly (Akpan does not count as he is under 21 this season). These take our squad to 27 - as we had used all 25 places in August and no one has left yet - and outward loans still count in the 25. I don't think it would not be a problem if the club had left spare spots in the 25 - but we did not do so.

Therefore, are the 25 man squad rules suspended for the whole of January?
Or if not do you have to tell the PL you are de-selecting a player if you want to add one to the 25 during January. This could be why (if true) Tabb has been told to go.
Or are new players not allowed to play for the club until the new 25 man squad is selected on the 1st February.

This could have an effect on whether we can even play Carrico or Kelly before 1st February.

I have looked at the PL rules but cannot see if this point is covered. Does anyone know the actual position?

You have to resubmit your 25 in January.

Don't see it much of an issue, presumably Tabb and Gunnarsson will be dropped out - and Church too if he was in the 25 originally.

You miss the point. You resubmit the new 25 on 1st February but what happens if you have more than 25 in January. It is this month only that is the issue.

Well in that case I presume it's the same as what happens in August as I don't think you officially put your 25 in until 1st September

Just goes to show what a totally ridiculous farce transfer windows and these stupid squad limits are.

I thought it a good question, so checked up. From:
http://www.premierleague.com/content/dam/premierleague/site-content/News/publications/squad-lists/Squad-Lists-September-2012.pdf

Changes to the squad list of 25 may be made during the period of a Transfer Window.

Given that McCarthy is one of our 25 and is injured, then presumably we could take him out and put Carrico in. Later in January, McCarthy can be brought back in again if appropriate although there are three other keepers already. To fit Kelly in, clearly Gunnarsson's place must be at risk, plus Church and anyone likely to leave - hence the Tabb story, I guess.

There's no concern on the homegrown aspect - it says Gunter is not home-grown but that has to be a mistake and he is listed alongside the other home-grown players, 18 in total where we need only 8.

On a side issue it was interesting to see that Robson-Kanu's first name is Thomas and McAnuff is properly Joel Joshua Frederick Melvin [abbreviated to Me in above list] Mcanuff.

McCarthy is expected back before the end of the season though.

Church, Tabb and Gunnarsson can all come out.

Akpan doesn't need adding to the 25, only Carrico and Kelly, and room for one more before anyone else needs to be removed.

Who will be in the 25

by andrew1957 » 01 Feb 2013 11:29

So assuming that out three new counting players (Carrico, Kelly and Blackman) are included in the 25 who do you think will be the three to make way.

The five prospects would seem to be:

Tabb
Gunnarsson
Church
Roberts (depending on severity of injury)
McCarthy (as above)

If it were me I would keep Tabby and Roberts (unless he is not expected to recover this season). I still think Tabb can do a job for us and realistically McCarthy will not now be up to speed this season and we have three other keepers. Church should probably go out on a season end long loan.

Bryn, Andersen and McCarthy would be the logical three to drop out. Church might also go and perhaps Cummings?

Given that Carrico has played it seems pretty self evident the rules do not apply in January

What is wrong with Roberts? Last I heard it was a recurring hump injury.

I believe Morrison doesn't count in the 25 because he's not old enough. Apparently not even toilet-trained.

25 man squad - http://t.co/sYMykSi8

Professionals in 25-man squad:

Adam FEDERICI; Chris GUNTER; Nicky SHOREY; Jem KARACAN; Alex PEARCE; Adrian MARIAPPA; Pavel POGREBNYAK; Mikele LEIGERTWOOD; Adam LE FONDRE; Noel HUNT; Jobi McANUFF; Garath McCLEARY; Jimmy KEBE; Jay TABB; Kaspars GORKSS; Hal ROBSON-KANU; Danny GUTHRIE; Alex McCARTHY; Ian HARTE; Shaun CUMMINGS; Stephen KELLY; Daniel CARRICO; Nick BLACKMAN; Jason ROBERTS; Stuart TAYLOR

Young pros not in 25-man squad but eligible due to date of birth:

Sean MORRISON; Hope AKPAN; Jake TAYLOR; Gozie UGWU; Jordan OBITA; Lawson D'ATH; Dominic SAMUEL

Professionals not in 25-man squad:

Simon CHURCH; Nicholas BIGNALL; Brynjar GUNNARSSON; Mikkel ANDERSEN; Brett WILLIAMS

I think Churchy will live to regret turning down Millwall for the wages. He rates himself a lot higher than anyone else clearly does. Give him one or two seasons in the Championship before he's found out and in then drops in to League 1 where he'll become a journeyman forward. Really nice lad but got his priorities wrong this window.

Good news - no Church and Andersen prob means McCarthy and Roberts will be fit again soonish. Surprised but pleased that Tabb is in. Last we see of Churchy then - loan for rest of season? Andersen to be loaned too.....

No real surprises there.

Andersen evidently wants out and Church must have known that this would be on the cards.

How is Bignall still here?!

So the upside of not signing Gylfi is that Jay Tabb gets to be in the squad for the rest of the season.

I suppose that's some consolation!

Agreed - he deserved a good club. As he is not likely to play a lot for us we might send him out on a short term loan to keep fit in case needed later in the season.

PERSONALLY, I think his short and sweet premier league days are over (with us, or anyone else).

HOWEVER, he proved that he has the credentials to mix it within the prem, and during his run of games (allbeit during our disasterous phase) he normally came out of it with the most credit.

WHICH, makes it even stranger that some of the more highbrow championship clubs never showed interest in him.

The clubs listing seems odd - it lists pros who arent in the 25 man squad but there a number of names missing from the list, eg Sheppard, Anderssen, Taylor (Jake); given Brett Williams IS listed, I am confused :?

Sheppard is out on loan so no need for him to be on the list, Anderssen is listed as not being given a squad place, Jake Taylor is listed as a u21 so can play even if not registered.

Can we wrap Taylor in cotton wool please? If he gets crocked in a reserves match it's going to get very uncomfortable. Would've left Andersen in for Tabb personally.
