A bit smug but he's ours - do we love him yet?

by mumbo-jumbo » 12 Jun 2013 17:55

So bored waiting for transfer news, decided it was time to talk about Nigel and what we do or don't love about him.

I can't read any article quoting him without switching to my Nigel voice in my head. I love his ambition and seeming self belief. Wonder how long before he feels relaxed enough to talk in a way other than through sound bites. Do you think that is because deep down he is actually quite insecure and worried about saying the wrong thing, is quite lazy about thinking up something original to say or just thinks we're all morons. Just over excited about who is coming in over the summer and know it is going to end in disappointment. I feel as though I'm warming to him, but don't love him yet, perhaps because he has yet to show any vulnerability. Still I spose he wasn't brought here to appear either loveable or vulnerable. The players say all the right things about his style of play. Wonder what they really think of him. Feel quite sure he won't allow himself to get over chummy with them in a McD kind of a way

I've got nothing against the guy, he has a good record and I think he does what he thinks is best for any club he's been at.

As for the soundbites, I just think he's one of those people who is supremely confident in his own abilities and does his best to get that message across to everyone connected with the club. The way he does that can be quite cringe worthy, but I don;t think he means to come over as arrogant. Just very positive.

I'm not sure how we're meant to love a guy who's only been in charge for 3 months.

But, I love the way he's trying to get us to play, I loved the way Saints played under him, and I love his managerial record.

He's also a genuinely nice guy, and I have little doubt that if we're even half successful under him next season we'll all grow very fond of Mr Adkins.

I don't find him smug at all. Confident, yes. Hell of a difference.

He is trying to improve the team and club, I'm liking it so far.

He comes across as being honest. He also seems to have a good relationship with Anton, things can only get better, surely?

Don't get the smug accusations either. He's intelligent, articulate and enthusiastic. I like him. I'm really excited about our prospects under Adkins and Zingaravich over the next season or so. Maybe it'll be a disaster, but I don't think so.

Most exciting time for Reading since we beat Sheffield Utd on 1 October 2005 IMO. Feels like when we started life in a new stadium looking for promotion back to tier two hoping to finally establish ourselves there. Only without a clueless scots git in charge.

If we win the league I'll suck his perma-tanned cock.

Don't really give a f*ck what he sounds like so long as his team delivers results on the pitch. If he gets results, he'll be liked. He's got to go some way to reach the love stakes in Harris Towers though. Think I'll struggle to love someone like I did Steve Coppell.

I like his ambition, I'll reserve judgement until the season takes shape. I do feel a bit for him - if we don't go up Anton won't be best pleased.

I've always thought he was a bit smug.

Nothing has changed.

He is now a smug Reading manager.

Hope he has something to be smug about.

Thought he was a smug git before he came to Reading, now he's come to Reading I generally try to avoid his interviews as the few I've listened to have been a bit cringe-worthy and I don't want to dislike a Reading manager.

If I listen to him in small doses then he is tolerable.

As for his love of cliches, this is football, if you want to have an illusion that there are intelligent people involved then avoid all the tv/radio/internet interviews of absolutely everyone involved.

It's no surprise that some Reading fans struggle to tell the difference between confidence and smugness. His self-belief doesn't sit well with the small club mentality that we are trying to move on from.

I can't remember the last time I was so excited about a forthcoming season.
