Royals and Racers
Pepe the Horseman We've signed four more kids for the U21s https://www.readingfc.co.uk/news/2022/a ... u21-squad/

20-year-old central midfielder Ethan Burnett, 18-year-old winger Adrian Akande, 17-year-old defender Ayyuba Jambang and 18-year-old midfielder Josh Green.

None of them are eligible for the first team this season.

Ethan Burnett played centre back on Monday alongside Holzman

Akande came on second half, I think Jambang was unused sub.
Signing players from other clubs is nothing new (Henderson, Smith, Richards, Olise etc etc). Makes no sense to just take 20 kids at age 7 and assume that group will all progress. Players leave, you bring in new players, same at every level.

3points Seems to me that we're increasingly signing players who have been released by other clubs - is this a statement that development through our academy isn't good enough perhaps? Other teams like Brentford and Huddersfield scrapped their academies completely and rely totally on signing other clubs' off-casts. I know a lot of that is dictated by geography as both those teams have lots of big club academies nearby who swallow up all the best talent.

I know Dai likes the academy structure and we're re-applying for Cat 1 status already. But if we had a new owner with less deep pockets then cutting the academy to a Brentford model could work given our proximity to all the London clubs and talent pool.

I think we're doing a mix of:

1) bringing kids through from a young age - see Obita, Holmes, McIntyre

2) searching for older rejected talent from top Academies who may have a clearer pathway to our first team at our level, see Olise, and

3) poaching quality older players from lower level Academies

Without the Academy we don’t have anywhere to put the second and third points to finish their development and transition them towards the first team.

We're also always going to have only a relatively small number make it through from the young age groups to be contenders for the first team because generally only a few ever make it anywhere, so we need to bolster numbers at the upper age groups to make up for the ones who don’t make it through the younger groups well enough to stay on.

Brentford are in the process of reopening their academy. PL clubs now have to one as part of their rules, by the start of the 2024-25 season. Interestingly it only has to be a category three academy.

We didn’t sign any of them as Academy players. Swift and Sidwell had already been playing at other clubs.
There aren’t many players these days who won’t be Academy graduates from somewhere….

Top academies will have scouting systems that will sign up kids from an early age. As the years pass they'll progressively get kicked out. Doesn't mean though that they won't mature into decent footballers in time and return to top level football.

Indeed, Chelsea certainly used to be a curse on this area scooping up loads of youngsters.
Don’t think any of the 3 were Academy rejects though. All went right through the system just didn’t make the first team (at 2 of the biggest clubs in the world !). We’ve signed loads of players who have been let go by Academies way before graduating (Richards, Olise etc etc)

Tetek is playing. No Clarkes.

Reading comfortably the better side. Very small side though, you know it is a small midfield when Tetek is the “big” one. Newcastle hit the post at the death from a set piece. Abbey playing well at centre back but he and Holzmann are on the shorter side for centre halves. Kelvin E is the only really tall guy in there.

MOTM so far is Osorio, he’s playing further forward than usual and doing a really good job linking play and getting on the end of things. He got the goal after a cross from Abrefa.
