Jack Mansell til he got sacked in Nov then Jimmy Wallbanks as care-taker. He tried 3-2-5!

Charlie Hurley was the magnificent permanent replacement, not sure if that was finally done in 71 or 72 though

Jan 72 - I think his first game might have been the infamous Blyth Spartans replay.

Never have so many schoolboys gone on so many nature rambles on a Wednesday afternoon in January.

Is this really worth starting a thread?? You spent all that time starting one up when you could easily type in Google search 'Reading Fc manager 1971'.......and guess what? It gives you the answer! Wow!

But it provokes magnificent discussion like the responses so far (yours excepted). I, for one, am riveted by anecdotes of times prior to my own supporting tenure from fans who's supporting tenure is longer than mine...

The draw at BS was blamed on the light, RFC were two up, then it started getting dark, and BS had no floodlights I think, and scored two goals in the dimming light, much to RFC's complaints.

Blyth then refused to play under floodlights at EP, hence the afternoon kick off. And mass queues, when they got frustrated they forced the doors to the Town end and hundreds got in for free.

Agreed. But it is interesting that whenever a subject turns up that really is worth debating - someone always starts a thread that takes the spotlight off.
So today we have Chris Baird signing - so lets talk about a manager from 1971? Expecting melt down after the transfer deadline date? Main topic - How far would you walk for a home game? Believe me, it happens every time something of real debate happens at RFC. Not moaning - just wonder why. Must be something in the psyche of certain Reading fans? :?

Why would anyone be going home in a Reading ambulance? Surely a hospital is always the better option.

I guess 'You're staying overnight in The Battle Hospital*' doesn't scan as well.

* For younger Nobbers, Battle Hospital used to be Reading's A&E - conveniently situated close to Elm Park!

Anyway, to return to the OP, Jack Mansell was the manager for 10.5 months of 1971 and it all went terribly wrong with our first relegation for 40 years then a failure to challenge for promo from Div 4.

The final straw was a 1-8 home defeat for Reading Reserves (v Cardiff, P.King (6)) after which he was sacked the next morning. Sacked after a reserves defeat!
