London Teams

by Zaretsky » 22 Jan 2014 17:02

What's the most number of London-based teams Reading have played in a single season :?:

Would it be more than Palace, Fulham, West Ham coming down, Orient and Brentford coming up and Reading, QPR, Charlton, Millwall and Watford staying in the Championship?

What's the most number of London-based teams in any one division in any one season?

Answers on a postcard, addressed to Mr D Zaretsky esq. Cheers. Bye.

We faced Fulham, Chelsea, Charlton, west ham, arsenal and spurs when we were promoted to the pl for the first time, so guess the mark to beat is 6

This Zaretsky guy seems to think Reading's in London as well though. So god knows what his criteria is. Makes you wonder if he's ever even been to London.

Think of it from the point of view of London Royals - we're thinking about how many games we can see in a season, using an Oyster card to get to the ground by public transport

Correct. But all of the above was dependent on Reading staying in the Championship, so needed saying.

I would support the Oyster card boundary as a way to demarc8 the London/non-London clubs.

Might need to consider cup games.

Think we also had 6 in 03-04 with Palace, (original) Wimbledon, Millwall, West Ham, Watford and Chelsea in the cup.

Ridiculous thread. What next? What's the most teams from Lancashire we've played in a season?

I thought about this too (I must be ridiculous)

The possibility remains that we could have 9 (pwoper) London teams.

On a wider scale that would mean roughly half the Championship would be southern, rather than the Gravy-fest we have to endure currently

Right. I can excitingly* reveal that going back to 91/92, the most games in London which we have played is 7 (SEVEN), which we have done twice in that period, most recently, last year: Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Fulham, West Ham, QPR in the league, and QPR again in the Cup.

We also did this in 2006/7, where we played at the most different London grounds (Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham, Fulham, Watford, Charlton).

Records before 91/92 are hard to find (i.e. not on the Wikipedia page I was looking at), but given the historical preponderance of London teams in the top league, I feel spending another hour on this probably isn't worthwhile.

If we use that criteria, then London red buses/Oyster card zones should also apply.

^ Don't think that makes any difference. Only ones where it could have made a difference over the past 20 odd years would be Grays or Luton, but I don't think buses go that far.

Is there a record we could go for the most London teams and Watford played in a season, we can then chant about it to impress rival fans "About 9 or 10, About 9 or 10, We've got the record about 9 or 10"

Actually, there were seven different grounds in London in 12/13, thanks to the AFC Wimbledon friendly.
