Do we want promotion?

by Y21 » 15 Mar 2014 23:24

Bit of a strange one this. Listening to the decidedly mediocre BBC Radio Berkshire after the game, there were a few punters saying we don't want to be promoted.

I can kind of understand where they are coming from. If we do somehow manage to upset the odds and gain promotion via the play offs, obviously the squad would not be good enough as it currently stand and would struggle to compete. However...who would put the money in? Madejski? I doubt it. Zingarevich? Who?

So therefore, do we want to be promoted with the ownership situation still up in he air? Or should we pray for 7th to avoid any possibility of taking Derby's crown of worst team ever?

Just go for it

We've avoided the "Boom and Bust" thing twiceover now.

It would be good to see some of the Royal babes gaining first team opportunities even if via the bench.

It is laughable to suggest getting promoted would be a bad thing.

You can't turn promotion down in all honesty. However...would I care if we didn't go up? No not really.

My only concerns are:

Would Adkins walk / get booted if we don't achieve promotion?
What would the team look like come August?

I really would like to see Adkins' doing some of his own deals / bringing some youth talent through next year. I personally think there is less chance of that if we go up.

Would obviously make us more attractive as an investment, but we'd have to make sure they wouldn't bugger back off to Russia/Oman/USA/UAE if we got relegated.

I can't see being promoted as a bad thing, but without proper funding I'd honestly struggle to see us finish anywhere but 20th if we were.

If you don't want promotion you're an idiot.

Being a Premier League club would attract more investors, would possibly lead to any new owner investing even more as well. Also if we don't go up we'll face losing a lot of our stand out players, ALF, Pog, McCleary, Drenthe etc. Don't go up now and we'll have to put up with mid table mediocrity for quite a few seasons, and possibly lose Adkins along the way, who is the perfect manager for the long term future of the club.

I'd rather go see Championship football where we're in the mix for success than see us beat most weeks getting relegated. We've done the PL holiday three times in the last 10 years so its not even a novelty anymore.

There's always a chance of making it work though, so it's not something I want us to actively avoid. I just think we might be better off staying down and going up in a better position to make it stick. But the money would be good and there's no guarantee we'll ever get another chance. The owner situation is a big deal in all this. If there's deep pockets just round the corner we're better waiting, if not then going up, taking relegation and banking the cash is the better option.

How do parachute payments work if you get relegated > promoted > relegated? Is there a crossover on the final year of the first relegations payments and the first year or the second relegations payments, or do they nullify eacother?

Which will NEVER be sustainable without the huge cash injection that only promotion to the top flight can provide............................Reading supporters and, in particular, Adkin's arse bandits forever in Cloud Cuckoo Land.

I would almost rather not go up, this year. Another year of getting spanked every week, would probably squash my enthusiasm for football. I would rather stay down until we get our consistency back, get the wage bill under control and get the decent, high-tempo passing game we've been moving towards.
