Berks & Bucks Cup - we're back?

by Fox Talbot » 22 Aug 2014 21:07

Says in the Newbury Weekly News this week that Reading are drawn away to Marlow in the B&B Cup.

It's been some years since we played in this eminently winnable competition.

But I can't find the fixture on the Marlow or Reading sites.

I make that 15 teams entered, 12 in the first round, 2 byes, so where's the 15th team? No sign of Wycombe Wanderers in the 1st round?

Oh, and ties were supposed to be played 8th and 9th August 2014 but quarter finals aren't until 14th November. Would guess maybe 9th Aug should read 9th Sept or 9th Oct, or even perhaps 9th Nov?

I know that historically they were in Berkshire but are Wantage and Didcot only there to make up the numbers?

Were you sporting a rather handsome moustache in homage to your heroes on the pitch?

These two I can understand as they would have been B&B members before the County boundary cahanges in 1974. Not sure though how Shrivenham manage to get into the B&B Senior Trophy though - may be for the same reason but baffles me completely.

To return to the OP - I take it we're in - which is a nice change of mind by the club - but still no-one knows when we're playing Marlow?

...I'm sure I'd worked out somehow that ties need to be played by the 10th October - most likely 'gap' in the schedules looking at both clubs fixtures, would be w/c 22nd Sept? Of course we can be more flexible, since we're unlikely to send a 'First XI' in spite of the optimistic 'label' against us on the B&B FA site.

However - few words of caution - someone somewhere amongst the Blazers has either made a right 'royal' f£ck up with the draw or are not telling us the full picture ... do the math:

SIX first round winners plus TWO (last years Finalists normally get byes = Chesham & SYCOB) PLUS Wycombe ! = NINE teams in the Quarter Finals!

...would expect the obvious 'answer' to be a sudden appearance of WWFC v Beaconsfield as a First Round Tie that they 'forgot' to put up on their site.

The 'Chairboys' forum have also spotted they aren't in the draw for the first round - maybe the B&B FA hired the BBC Oxford team to do the draw this year - they famously c&cked up big time a few years back when somebody dropped the ball for Witney Town under the desk during the 'live' broadcast - and no-one noticed - the 'Blanketboys' possibly had to be shoe-horned in a at later round - though actually I think they came up with some lame excuse about dodgy form-filling and left them out for a season !

... have posed this very conundrum on the NL Forum - will return when I get a decent response......

... thought I'd already said last week but may have lost a posting when BBand 'crashed' (again) : take extra dosh for the wonderful 'Carol's Kitchen' at the Alfred Davis Ground - well worth the queues - magnificent old stand high up above the bar too - and down below - they generally have a couple of Rebellion Ales available. 8)

Oh and for TB's benefit Shrivy are in the B&B remit cos they too were in Baaarks up until 1974. - seems to be written into the Trophy Rules and Regs that they will ALWAYS be drawn away at Stag Meadow too - ... be warned though .... they seem to be a bit bigger and stronger this season !
(probably should have put that bit on the GF Forum :? )

.... or maybe we aren't! :(

Just checked the B&B FA site and the draw has been amended: only five 1st Round Ties and Marlow are now marked as having a bye according to the entrants list.

.... the ties will need to be played by Friday 10th October.

Wycombe may not be entering this year at all as, according to a response to my post over on the NL Forum, reportedly they are not running a Reserve side this season. There is no update on the Chairboys forum though, where the very same oddity had been raised re why they weren't appearing in the first round draw.

The original list is still on the FA site though - with 15 entrants including Wycombe. The mathematical conundrum would appear to have been solved with:

5 1st Round Winners + Chesham (Holders) + SYCOB (R-up) + Marlow = 8 in the Quarters.

...so maybe no fun evening outing to OakTree Rd later this month.....

Will post if I establish any firmer evidence from any of the clubs involved.
