2 world wars, 1 world cup Why the **** do we STILL not have a left back?

We did have one but a) he and the manager didn't want him to play there (madness) and b) he's now joined our first choice injury 11

Obita plays on the Wing & in Midfield. He is a cover left back.

He won POTS playing left back. He's a great option there, but wouldn't get in our first team in either of those positions.

When you win PotS playing at left back, you can reasonably be considered a left back.

POTS? That's just a word pal means nothing. Reading fans mainly voted for him because he is a youth product. Didn't take much to win it last season either. Obita played half of last season on the Wing/Midfield.

As pointed out here and on another thread, over the course of last season Obita developed into a very competent left back. Even though it may not be his preferred position he is now more than capable of playing there and certainly better than any other options we currently have (no disrespect to Cummings who I really like).

Do you even watch games or are you just a bit thick? He played a handful of games in midfield, and was largely not very good when playing there.

However Cummings is doing a better job at RB than Taylor is at LW, so for that reason I'd stick Obita at LW for now if available.

Fair point though - everyone going "oooh but he won Player of the Season" as if a few votes from the RFC fans who could be arsed to submit one is a sign of epic prowess. He just gets a lot of good will because he's a youth product.

That said, IMHO you build a team from the back and he's a better LB than anyone else in the squad so that's where i'd play him

Ok so we eventually found that a left footed player did ok (I.e. Not horribly) at left back. So technically we have a (developing) left back yes.

But

1) deep down we all know we don't really don't we
2) he's injured now
3) even when not injured he's not used in that position
4) we need two. One dead cert starter, one cover. We have at best, an injured possible/promising/developing LB who is not played there even when fit, no cover, and a RB who we're shoehorning into that position, poor chap.

Noone's fault really. Cummings is a good lad doing his best, Adkins is trying his best with what we have, ownership fiasco continues, etc..

But it doesn't change the fact that we STILL have no left back or cover.

Just saying.

What's Steve Swales doing these days?

Does anybody know if Obita is not playing LB because he doesn't actually want to? I mean its not exactly a glamour position.

I know we're not the only championship side in the market for a LB, so maybe a good one is hard to find atm.

Adkins clearly rates Obita, hence why he gave him his chance ahead of McAnuff on the left last season, and has used him as his go to guy for positions he's struggling to fill. Adkins obviously feels that Obita is someone he can trust to play central midfield during the injury crisis and that Cummings is an able deputy at left back in the meantime. He's also trusting Taylor to stand in on the left.

Now none of those are particularly ideal but on their own none are particularly bad ideas. What we've seen, a little unsurprisingly, is that all three together are not working at all. Cummings at left back is actually working the best, it's the combination of having Taylor ahead of him who tucks into the centre far too much that's the real killer.

That's relatively easy to solve as soon as we've got a couple of central midfielders fit. Switch Obita to left back and he can go outside Taylor effectively. Switch Obita for Taylor and Cummings has an outlet on the flank. Obita has worryingly picked up an injury, but we've no idea how bad. In addition, Mackie is available again and I'd hope he / Blackman is more able to hug the left side and solve the problem Taylor is causing.

Now Akpan was fit for Forest and really should have started. But it's also clear that Adkins doesn't really rate him and that he's not particularly good. There was also Norwood, but he had very little time to train with the team. So really, Adkins has made just the one big mistake and that was against Forest in not starting Akpan over Taylor / Cummings and shifting Obita wide.

Now if he continues to make the same mistake, he's due a lambasting. But we're four games into a very hard start to the season with a major injury crisis. Having only just got to the position where we can sign new players a couple of weeks ago.

The sky is not falling. The end of the world is not nigh. There is no disaster.

How many times is it that people have to be told the parachute payments are needed to cover the existing wage bill?
