Call time on Pog

by paddy20 » 04 Mar 2015 18:23

Despite our paucity of strikers is it time to call time on the Pog? I just wonder what he offers anymore.

He can't jump
He can't shoot
He can't control the ball
He's got no pace
He hardly ever scores
He has poor first touch

He does try but is that enough? Time for a more mobile attack with Cox and Mackie up front and Yakubu and the Pog for last 15 min subs. Lets face it he has been an expensive disaster based on a short period of games with Fulham where he scored 6 in 6 and then no goals after that. Time to wise up

It's a shame but its looking like we can't even offload him this summer, sadly he has still got another year left on his ridiculous contract. Everyone thought he was a lot better than he actually is/was when he joined, and you have to admire their loyalty in keeping faith that he will come good for this long.

I'm sorry though, when I watch us live I have longed to see this potentially great player that some suppose he is but I am still yet to see it. He is not a "class" player, not even close and his signing is the epitome of everything that has been wrong at the club behind the scenes since his compatriot friend took over.

He'd be fine as a second striker with a pacey goalscorer next to him. He's at his best dropping deeper, receiving the ball to feet and holding up / spreading play. He does that pretty well. He's not a goalscorer, or a target man by any stretch and we don't have the right person to bring the best out of him. Even if we did he's not worth what we're paying him.

Sadly, we've not got a lot of choice. We've got quite a few players who can play as ok - poor second strikers of various flavours, Pog, Cox, Blackman, HRK, Mackie etc. We just don't have a goalscorer who's in reasonable shape or experience.

Hopefully either we can move him on in the summer or make sufficient savings elsewhere to bring in what we need up top. Maybe Tanner, or Samuel could make the step up next season. Too soon for Cardwell or Nova.

Can't control the ball and poor first touch are the same thing. Pog's control, first touch, receiving of the ball and hold up play are generally very good.

if your Cox, Mackie partnership is a winner, surely your subs wouldn't be two strikers?

I would like to see Pog and Mackie Saturday.

Been stating this for ages. However the muppets on this board appear to think he's having good games.

I will say again probably one of the most goal shy, ineffective strikers that we have had (Not the worst but ONE of them)

I would love it (Kevin Keegan mode) if he scores the winner Saturday.
However I cannot imagine that he will be up for playing on a quagmire with a bit of pride and passion required.

Not sure I would agree when you compare him to players like Murray , Long or Doyle. At best he is a lower league CF. However I do accept the you have a right to your opinion which I respect. Shame you have to escort to abusive comments when I make mine

I think Pav has worked a lot harder recently but the stats don't look good

33 apps 8 goals 4 assists - 2205 minutes - 0276 gls/min - 0184 g+a/min Cox
23 apps 3 goals 3 assists - 1190 minutes - 0397 gls/min - 0198 g+a/min Mackie
31 apps 3 goals 3 assists - 1448 minutes - 0483 gls/min - 0242 g+a/min Blackman
21 apps 2 goals 2 assists - 1088 minutes - 0544 gls/min - 0272 g+a/min Taylor
20 apps 3 goals 1 assists - 1213 minutes - 0404 gls/min - 0303 g+a/min Pav
16 apps 0 goals 2 assists - 1170 minutes - XXXX gls/min - 0885 g+a/min McLeary
22 apps 1 goals 0 assists - 1498 minutes - 1498 gls/min - 1498 g+a/min HRK
04 apps 0 goals 0 assists - 0174 minutes - X XXX gls/min - XXXX g+a/min Yakubu

That should be mins per goal and mins per goal or assist

When did Yakubu's goal get revoked?

In fact where are you getting your stats from?

Well that's a first for snowball. And I'm not sure how he's got to 174 minutes for Yak in that case, seeing as he had 19, 23, 90 and 19. Which I make 151, that's a lot of injury time. Was he on for the 11 minute extravaganza... that'd probably cover the difference, although a stat website wouldn't include it.

Pav is expensive and a bit shit, but so are most of our players at the moment. At least he is trying hard and putting lots of effort in, while playing as well as Murray did before Christmas. I don't think he deserves any criticism at the moment. He is certainly worth about a 100 Yakubus.

Clarke has him Playing better than ever. imo

He does win headers and hold it up, and puts in a shift

But agree on first touch and lack of pace

I think the biggest criticism is his lack of goals. If he could only score a few most of the rest could be forgiven

When, and more importantly, how, did Blackman get three assists?

Pog isn't scoring enough but we don't have any better options. To be honest, our attacking play has been completely toothless in recent weeks. Whilst Pog's a part of that, all the players around him are desperately out of form (except Mackie) so it seems harsh to single him out.
