Kevin Watson

Watto has been appointed to his first managerial role. He takes over at Malden and Tiptree with effect from today.

Would like to wish him the very best of luck with it. He was a good servant to Reading and a thoroughly nice guy.

The best passer of the ball I've seen play for Reading.

I met him in Basingstoke town centre and almost jumped over a bench to shake his hand, much to the bemusement of my girlfriend (and his young daughter). Like people said before, he's a nice guy and seemed genuinely humbled when I told him how much I rated him.

He'll do well as a manager with his approach to people. Good luck, Kev!

Vastly overrated for Reading when he signed permanently. One excellent performance against Nottingham Forest (03/04) and little else to go with it.

Probably going to be in the minority on that one.

Thought he was excellent for us and an exceptional passer of the football.

That would be because he was just that. To claim that he was anything less than an excellent passer of the ball shows a clear and distinct failure to recognise a good footballer (oh, and a jolly decent chappie too!)

An excellent player for us, great passing ability and game awareness.

I was fortunate enough to know him quite well in those days and agree he was a genuinely top bloke too. I hope he makes a success of it there.

Don't think Alan Pardew really rated him though - even though he signed him .... a bit of a mystery for me at the time, as I always thought he looked really good when he played.

Ho-hum

A week ( or so ) is a long time in football.

Has just been appointed assistant manager to Teddy Sheringham at Stevenage.

I just saw that too. The timing was unfortunate, but it would appear to be a good move for him. Hopefully his parting was amicable and that he has a good run supporting Teddy at Stevenage. I'll be back in a week to wish him luck at his next club

Sounds like he could be the next Steve Coppell.

lol

Hope it works out for him down there. Get some good experience and then get his chance as a manager in the football league later.

Tell us more. Did you just clamber over the bench?

FWIW I once hid from Jimmy Quinn in BHS as I was too frightened to go and talk to him.

He was walking past on the other side and in my excitement I almost leapt it. Instead, I just walked over to him after shouting 'KEVIN WATSON!'. He was my favourite player when he was here, so the occasion got to me a bit.

My girlfriend thought I was a bit of a kunt at the time. She probably still does, actually.

Potential thread spin off, ways you've approached a player.

I approached Ivar Ingimarsson in Manchester airport after we were gubbed at Bolton with "Bad day at the office?" I think he thought I was taking the piss. I wasn't Ivar, I wasn't. The rest of the team trotted down but I was too embarrassed to strike up a conversation with anyone after that.

Jobi McAnuff bought me a jagerbomb in a club in Newcastle after the 2-1 win. I will be having grandchildren solely to tell them that story

"Mine's a shot of water", said Jobi, guzzling another sambuca triumphantly after the first away win of the season.
