Bit of a cumbersome but whole-hearted central defender-sounds like Pearce, is like Pearce.
Not good enough for Premier League football but unfortunately the days of signing players that would be good enough have gone.

Always thought he was a bit of a donkey and if we were a team looking at a title challenge i'd say no thanks. However, he's at a level that is realistic for us in our current state.

Not a step up from what we already have but Pearce out, McShane in would not represent a weakening of the squad IMO.

Reading FC target Paul McShane to replace Derby County bound Alex Pearce

Royals’ boss Steve Clarke flew to Dublin this week to talk to the Republic of Ireland international

Reading want Republic of Ireland defender Paul McShane.

Royals boss Steve Clarke flew to Dublin this week to talk to the out of contract centre-back.

Clarke sees the 29-year-old as the ideal replacement for Alex Pearce, who is expected to complete his free transfer switch to the iPro Stadium imminently.

McShane, who started his career at Manchester United, joined West Bromwich Albion in 2006 before sealing a £2.5 million switch to Sunderland a year later.

A move to Hull followed in 2009 and he has gone on to make more than 100 appearances for the Tigers.

But McShane, who is preparing to face England with Ireland on Sunday, was released last month following Hull’s relegation from the Premier League.
