Ola John

by Kuhl_Runnings » 01 Feb 2016 14:39

I think it's about time this man got some more game time, he seems to turn a game on its head whenever he comes on. John is a perfect impact sub, but surely as a professional footballer he can last 90 minutes and still produce those brilliant displays, too. What do you lot think of him?

I think an embarrassingly large proportion of fans mistimed his part in the Piazon Ola John chant.

I don't think he is fit enough at the moment to play a full 90 minutes. The club are working to improve his fitness.

I for one would love to see much more of Ola John. I think he's a terrific player. I hope Brian sees it the same way we do and is trying to get him fitter and give him more minutes in the team on a saturday afternoon.

Reminds me of Kebe.

Awkward & clumsy yet seems to make things happen.

Needs to learn how to beat the first man with his crosses though.

He doesn't offer a lot defensively so it's probably as much to do with the balance of the team as fitness.

He does offer flashes of brilliance but can also do a very decent Bambie-on-Ice

Can't agree more. That's really the only flaw I have with him besides his match fitness.

Why is he so unfit anyway? Is he, like me, naturally unfit and will never be able to get match fit for a 90 minute football match. Or does he bring it on himself. Does he spend too much time at Chicken Cottage?

Awful when starting, mostly great when subbed on.

No one better as an impact squad, but why risk damaging the starting eleven unless he forces himself in with goals and assists galore, or there's an injury. Use him where he's best, on the bench. Guarantee him at least 20 minutes a game barring other subs being required more urgently.

Partly suspect his lack of ability to track back is due to his lack of fitness. Plus he's probably just not been brought up doing defensive duties

Reminds me of Mattheu Manset, charges round the pitch like a rampaging bull, capable of match winning moments of genius, but only as long as you don't expect him run around for more than 20 minutes.

Think he has a bit more going for him than Manset!

Ola John is utter quality. No idea why he isn't fit enough to play a whole game but even more bewildered as to why he doesn't just start and get subbed later. We start games so poorly, surely this guy would help us make a quick impact.

I think that's the thing. He definitely gives the impression he could offer us so much more than just 20 minute cameos. The only way he's going to get up to speed though is by playing a run of games and given he's A) another loan player and B) gets injured when he does start so I'm not sure McD thinks it's worth the risk when we have decent players in that position anyway.

That's a shame because I do think with a little work he's a player who could really shine in the Championship, possibly step up to the level above and a loan we could realistically turn into a permanent addition at the end of the season.

Of course we don't know about the player's attitude and his fitness problems may be down to his own lack of motivation but it does seem like a bit of a wasted opportunity..

You're right. He was outstanding against Everton from the start. Put one on a plate for Blackman to put us in front in that game.

He is exactly the tonic that we need to start games well.

We keep conceding early goals so you think bringing an attacking winger who can't defend into the starting 11 will help? :|

Quinn is the answer.

More than one way to try to rectify it. Attack is often the best form of defence, perhaps we're conceding early because we're not posing a big enough threat to the opposition early on and start on the back foot.

Fair point but we also aren't creating or putting away enough chances either. Get stuck into teams early, put em behind etc. And I'm not suggesting we play John in goal.
