Going by your criteria every manager every season replaces their top goal scorer as long as a different player scores more goals..

that is still defo true.
though it doesn't apply to the loss of long, who we didn't replace with more goals from a single player.

To be specific I feel monk only suffered because of inability (through no fault of his own) to adequately replace Bony (not just a top scorer but also their star striker). Gomis was a great free transfer and his signings were fairly quality in other areas of the team. The team he inherited was significantly weaker than the one he has left behind him.

I think he would be a great appointment. Obviously there are other better and more interesting names like stam being floated about (who would be a very exciting appointment) but I hold Monk I high regard until he is a proven failure.

tidus_mi2 You said top goal scorer, we lost Gylfi and he got Long to step up the next season and his goals got us into the play-offs. After we lost Long, while we didn't get a 20 goal player, he made additions that created a team that won the League.

Bit of a stretch to say he was solely responsible for Longs improvement.. also Long didn't replace gylfi in the team? They play different positions and as is often pointed out we have never gylfi! And to say he replaced long with multiple players isn't exactly the same either...

you said it was difficult to replace the clubs top goal scorer.
I just said brian managed it two years in a row.

these are the FACTS

Correct.

Yeah, I was thinking Monk could be worth a shout, even if a few aren't bowled over by him. Really not sure that Stam can be classed as 'better, more interesting and a very exciting' appointment though. Still, we're all entitled to our opinions, eh.

Got a feeling Jaap Stam is not going to happen. Supposed to have been in discussions all last weekend, would have thought we would have heard something by now.

He probably wants to wait and see what the result of the referendum is before committing to a move to the UK.

If you take Jaap Stam's name and remove all the letters apart from P, M and A and add the letter R, E, I, L, U and G you can spell PREMIER LEAGUE

I guess I'm just excited that we're linked with a former world class player.. he's a name everyone knows! I can't recall us being linked with someone as internationally renowned as him.

Bergkamp?

Considering every arsenal fan I know wants him to manage them one day I always felt that was impossible... he is a much more renowned player that I accept
