Not watching Reading

by floyd__streete » 04 Aug 2016 14:04

Hello all, happy new season to you all even those of who on here who I don't really care for. x

Was discussing old times the other day, as I am wont to do. And reminiscing how in the non-digital age getting hold of the latest from a RFC game you were not attending was a little harder work than it is now. I can recall gathering outside the window of Rumbelows on Friar Street with other like-minded tragics when Grandstand flashed up that we'd won 4-0 at Port Vale and a cheer went up. But my preferred method was to pretend to read Private Eye in Town News, Smelly Alley at about 4:40 on a Saturday afternoon to cock a sneaky ear to proprietor Rob Sclachter's radio tuned to Classic Gold 1431 and catch the last 5 minutes of commentary of our latest defeat. Happy days.

Family holiday in Spain during the record breaking start to season 1985/86. Had to wait for the Sunday papers to arrive to find out of we'd kept the run going, which would be some time Monday afternoon.

Not one of the oldies on here but I did used to get excited every time Reading played in the FA Cup and would be an appearance on MOTD.

I had a mates birthday up in Liverpool - you might know him, mutual friend of Green and Wax Jacket's older brother, it's not important. I was there early on the Saturday and wondering around a shopping centre at 1730ish. There was a crowd of a good couple of dozen crowded round the TVs in Dixons seeing the scores come in.

1999 - 2002, I used to follow on BBC live text commentary.

It's currently

Attempt missed. Craig Conway (Blackburn Rovers) right footed shot from outside the box is just a bit too high. Assisted by Corry Evans.

It used to be much less descriptive.

I don't know why, but I have a firm memory of us getting a match report in the Times losing 2-1 to West Brom, and it was the first time I could remember us getting more than a scoreline and attendance. It was a league game, guess that there was an international week.

I think I am part of the last generation to enjoy Ceefax/Teletext. Used to have it "transparent" on the live score updates at the bottom while you could still watch the TV.

Hang on, we had Radio 210 from about 1976. Before that I used to listen to BBC Radio Oxford, who covered all RFC games, home and away.

True but I guess the point is portable radios weren't ubiquitous - or at least pocket sized ones weren't.

A simpler time.

There were loads of pocket radios at most games, scores soon passed around of other games at EP.
Doubt people took them shopping with then though

They were widely and cheaply available though.

Walking out of a game there often be a guy with one, and people would crowd around him as he walked to hear the final scores.

Very few would have one though. Oddly, I was next to a guy at the 95 play-off final, who had a radio, who was listening to the commentary for the game he was watching.

Yeh it's a good point. Why was it there was only ever a handful of radio hams in a terrace of a few thousand who'd bothered to buy one?

Maybe because Apple hadn't marketed it

I`m old school. many years ago papers used to come out with half time scores in the stop press section, then again at full time. used to wonder around town on Saturday afternoon and buy them when they came out.

Either wait for Monday's Reading Evening Post or teletext.

There was a BBC radio *xf*rd before 1976, and they actually gave a **** about Reading?

What did coverage amount to in those days? Just reading out the scores on a Saturday or did they actually give match reports?

IIRC, BBC RO used Ralph Dellor as their RFC reporter, at least he understood football. 210 were absolute shite, I think they used to ring the Reading Chronicle for a score update. It was years before they actually had someone at the game. One evening away game, they kept saying, "the last we heard it was 0-0." Around 9.30, they announced we'd lost 5-0.
