You get 2 points if you win on pens which complicates things even further...

If we win via shoot-out we'll go through, unless Bristol Rovers beat Yeovil by the same method and then beat Portsmouth in 90 minutes come the next round of fixtures. We'd also have to lose to Yeovil in normal time

Pretty sure there was some sort of group cup in the early 80s. We may have even knocked Watford out when they were one of the best teams in the country.

Saaaaaaaammmmmm Annoying as a win would definitely have put us through to the Last 32

The other game in our group is currently 0-0 at Bristol Rovers, however Yeovil are down to 10 men

Apart from the Peace Cup and other possible pre-season tournaments, is this the first time we've ever competed in a round-robin phase of a cup competition?

No i think the associate members cup/league trophy was a group stage thing back in the early 80s. Seem to remember one year beating Watford, then in div 1, by 5-3

I wasn't technically alive so that's my excuse...

Yeah the Checkatrade Trophy in an earlier life was known as the Freight Rover Trophy, this was in 1985 when the group stage format was first introduced

We finished 3rd out of 3 teams, losing 0-3 to Leyton Orient, and 0-5 to Bournemouth

This very same cup, in it's earlier names (Freight Rover Trophy?) had a group stage.

That was how Aldershot managed to progress to the 2nd round of the cup one year despite losing 10-1 at Southend in their first match. They then went on to beat us 3-1 in their second group game. We lost 0-4 to Southend in our home game.

We once had a group match at Swansea where we had to win to qualify, and only about 27 (literally, I think it was 27) fans bothered to go. We won 2-1.

Having not had a penalty shootout for a good number of years, we have our second of the season

Who will be the hero/villain?

Mendes and Blackett score our first 2 but so do Portsmouth...

But Jaakkola saves their third!

Sounds like there's been some special goalkeeping.

That win puts us top of the group, however as Bristol Rovers beat Yeovil on penalties tonight then we aren't mathematically through

Yeah, the LDV Autoglass definitely used to have a group stage in the early 90s - groups of three teams, two went through. I don't think we've ever really had much of a run in it.

Am I still okay to use "A touch off frost" if/when a suitable situation arises?

I remember going to that game. Must have been '82 or '83. We were 3-1 down with only a few minutes left when the bulk of the Watford fans left. Amazingly, we got it back to 3-3 before winning 5-3 after extra time. Back when we had no internet or mobile phones and only a few cars had radios in them, many of those early departing Watford fans would only have learnt that they had lost when they read their morning papers!
PS Just checked the records in 'Heaven on Earth' and the game was on December 8th 1982 and it was the QF of the Football League Trophy. We lost in the SF to Millwall in the January.
