The "reward youth" debate

by NewCorkSeth » 03 Nov 2017 11:50

Given we have 2 world champions in our youth squads (1 on loan albeit) and the raging debate over whether England's young champions deserve more premier league minutes what are people's thoughts on Loader in particular?
Is it clubs duty to see youth footballers given more first team action considering their success this year?
Are we, along with Fulham and Sessegnon, better placed than the premier league teams to blood young talent early and ensure the future of English youngsters are bright?

I would say yes, but it's a difficult one for any Championship manager. The pressure to get to the PL is so high I can see why they worry about blooding youngsters. With Smith potentially being out injured for the Derby game though, maybe Danny could be awarded a place on the bench?

would like to see Loader getting some more game time in the U23s first of all.

If he gets on a nice little scoring streak then by all means start getting him in the first team squad. I think he is being given a break after the WC, so won't see him for a little while yet either way.

Considering his form for the U23 team, I would have thought Barrett would be in line for at least an appearance on the bench.

A very fair point.

Do we then ask that the under 23s sacrifice to fast track him? Should the first team manager or head of youth development or director of football have a say to who should be getting game time?

I see nothing wrong with Stam (or whoever) saying this is a potential hot property we have here. Play him more so we can develop him properly.

He wasn't too bad when he got his few games under Brian 2 seasons back was he?

Bags of talent, very raw and lacked defensive discipline. Kicking on nicely, but competing in one of our stronger areas of the pitch against Barrow, Beerens and probably Aluko too.

Move into mid-table and he should be given chances in March / April

Wouldn’t be upset to see Barrett in the squad at all

Like the look of him - strong, quite fast and good shot on him. Touch of arrogance and nastiness about his play as well which makes me think he could make the step up

I think historically we've been too cautious but that right now we have things about right.

I think the most exciting talents are Holsgrove and McIntyre but they're still young and play in crowded positions. Could only see Holsgrove playing if Swift and Kelly were both injured. McIntyre has had almost a year out.

Richards and Smith have had opportunities but that's been more down to the lack of options in our squad.

Barrett is in very good form after a poor year last year. Most likely to play as a winger. We have six senior wingers. It's not out of the question that he could get a chance (McCleary and Beerens continue to struggle, Popa stays out of favour, Harriott doesn't get back to his best) but I wouldn't pick him ahead of Barrow just for the sake of it.

Loader is getting a lot of hype, and has looked good when he's been around the first team. His goal record at youth level is poor but he's often played out wide. Probably too diminutive to be doing Smith's job but I wouldn't mind him as an impact option from the bench.

What do you think about Osho SCIAG?. I liked the look of him. More so than Andresson tbh

Andrija Novakovich has scored 7 goals in 11 games for Telstar and has played more minutes than anyone else in their squad.

He's been in the Eerste Divisie Team Of The Week 4 times. Big pre
-season for him in the summer.

Stam has shown good management with the introduction of Smith. Leave the decisions to him. As to when players are ready.

Hmm could have done it several games earlier. We might have a few more points.

And fcuk off Ian Royal before you start.

The fact that he is injured is probably an indicator as to why Stam was cautious about bringing Smith in. The size and mentality of some of the centre backs we've seen this season would suggest that a lone striker needs to be made of stern stuff.

I like Novacovitch, but I'm not sure I see where he fits in.

He's never struck me as a No. 9 you'd use as a focal point, or put in a No. 10 role. But he's not particularly pacey either. He seems like more of a L/R sided forward in a 3, but to play narrower than Stam seems to be looking for.

I hope he gets some sort of decent chance for us.

Barrett is an interesting one. I've thought for the last couple of weeks he can't be too far away given what he's doing in the u23s, and with the injuries picked up on Tuesday I can see him being on the bench today.
