Stranded Just to give you an idea of how bad this division was this year and as a result, how lucky we have been to survive:

After the Cardiff 2-2 draw on 11th December, we stood 14th with a total of 27pts from 21 games

Despite only picking up a further 17pts from 25 games, we only dropped 6 places in the division.

The clubs that were involved on the last day relegation tussle, with points at the time (and points gained on us):

19, Brum 16pts ( 13pts)
20, Reading 27pts
21. Bolton 16pts (10pts)
22. Barnsley 20pts ( 4pts)
23. Burton 14pts (10pts)
24. Sunderland 15pts (5pts)

In other words since just before Christmas we have been the worst team in the division and by a distance.

More reason for arguing that we were down if Stam had stayed

Ascotexgunner I'm expecting pretty much the same next year.

I'm not. I think, at worse, we'll be half-way.

We have a lot of very decent players, and once the defensive structure
(particularly defending from the front and DM) is sorted, we will be
hard to beat

Ascotexgunner Clement did his job of keeping us up, but from here he's the wrong man and I'll keep reiterating that point. He may of kept Swansea up but what then? New season, lost 10 in 13.

I really don't think relegation from the Premiership tells us much about managers.

That league is so money-heavy, and lesser teams are always up against it.

Tonight Swansea more or less have to win to stay up, so, again,
they are a club set up to drop this year, next... It's the way of the world
for many many clubs these days... more so when they sell players like Gylfi

Ascotexgunner At Derby they ditched him after 7 months..a good start, but then his team fell to bits when it mattered. The football went bad and the fans and owners got upset. I just don't think he has that winning mentality.
If he does turn this around I look forward to being slaughtered by you all.

I prefer to think of a man with a pedigree, who has saved two clubs from relegation (fact)
and is probably still learning. With a core of players who are definitely better than relegation-
fodder, it needs a good pre-season, a couple of talismanic players (eg a deadly striker and/or
another Al-Habsi), some DRILLING (no jokes, ta) we will do more than OK.

I am NOT expecting us to flirt with relegation next year

PC has said himself that he was brought in to keep us up. and now is the time to sort out the rest of the team. He seems to have some idea as to who he wants to keep and probably has an idea who he wants to bring in. Lets give him our backing and see how it goes next season, before we start saying he is not up to the job.

I think the pieces will be in place for a fairly solid season next year, and PC seems to have a fair idea of how he wants to set up.

I, and I expect he, would be happy with an upper mid table finish next season as long as we get some fight, and yes entertainment, back at the Madejski. Some of those home games this season were soul destroying - the likes of Millwall, Boro, Brum, Bolton, Sheff Utd, Brentford, Ipswich and the absolute nadir, Burton, were the games I’d hope will not be repeated next year

Okay his primary job was to keep us in the division, but looking back on the season, I think Stam would've done that anyway. We have had some quite woeful performances under clement and I just think he is not the right man to take us forward. I don't think we've actually played well once under his regime?

This was Stam's (unbalanced) squad though. Struggle to remember a run of games where we fielded the same team (barring injuries). Stam's lack of experience showed by the end. When plan A failed to work. He had no plan B.

Yes but the point is despite being shocking, there were a surprising number of teams who couldn't claw back enough points to do us harm.

It truly was a weak division this year and we are fortunate beneficiaries. We won't get so lucky next year, so need to improve markedly.

Terrible season. Glad it's over and that we survived.

What really annoyed me on Sunday was the fact that we actually showed a bit of passion against a good, if dirty, team. If only we'd shown this passion and defensive cohesion earlier in the season. I had the misfortune to stop at South Mimms services after the Ipswich game. Now they were a bad team, perhaps worse than us, but we didn't make any real effort. The Ipswich team were there with loads of Ipswich fans acting like they'd played like Real Madrid. I shook one of their player's hands and said "Well done, but we were oxf*rd terrible". He just smiled and nodded.

A lot of those teams had a lot of points to claw back though. Three of them clawed back at least ten points which is a fair whack for strugglers. In hindsight the first half of our season was disappointing but the second half of the season was disastrous.

I guess that just reinforces my point. The teams below us were terrible for the whole season, us just around half (we were bang average before that, if we'd held on v Cardiff in Dec, we would have been 12th).

Every team around us improved over this spell with the exception of Barnsley, who also got worse but their improvement was relatively minor. Just shows again what a poor league it was, we have picked up on average 0.68 PPG since Cardiff (a 31 pt season) which would and should see you out of it. Incredibly, we manage to be that bad in the one season where others manage to be worse.

Gut feeling is we'll be comfortably mid-table next year. A top half finish would be a good season.

Shows how open a division it is that bar two teams, you can't get longer than 9/1 on a relegation bet.

And our 33/1 to win it (not promotion, but to win it) is short, isn't it? Or are those prices pretty typical?

As for this season, it was indeed miserable, and I'm another who has barely bothered to go since the turn of the year. Worst season though? I might have gone to more games, but our last season at Elm Park, where we were relegated to League One with barely a whimper, felt much worse to me. There wasn't even a hint we were better than 24th, where we lost 5 of our first 6 games, and 15 of our last 17. Cup runs were alright mind you.

Edit - slightly boring aside, but I didn't know until reading about that 97/98 season on Wiki, that the Martin O'Neill that Tommy Burns signed as one of the magnificent seven or eight who came in and did fcuk all to keep us up is the same O'Neill who is now manager of Northern Ireland.
