From Despair To Where? Ignoring the obvious fact that it's impossible for him to be in the top 50 worst Premier League signings, did he really cost £800,000? I thought it was about £250,000.

Hence my surprise...

I had just begun watching Reading around this time, but was way too young to appreciate £ or implications.

Dariusz Wdowczyk was around this time too, wasn't he

At the time, £800,000 would have been a record transfer fee by quite some margin.

Mihailov did not cost £800,000

The record transfer fee for Reading only went up to £750,000 when the club signed Darren Caskey a year or two later.

At the time the true record fee I think was still the £250,000 paid for Steve Moran and then Craig Maskell although the Michael Meaker part exchange with Simon Osborn may have been valued at £500,000

Well yeah, that's what I'm saying. If he had cost £800,000, it would have tripled our record transfer fee on a 32 year old and a hell of a lot more would have been made of it at the time.

Sutekh
Mihailov

I heard he saw a video of the world cup final and it was dubbed with Reading FC commentators pretending it was a low key Reading match, a friendly against Barnet if I remember correctly.

On that basis he came to Reading and shortly after lost his hair when realised he was conned.

For the click shy, he now heads up the commercial team at an energy drink company.

Cheers mate.

I've just found out there's a 16 page pullout next week in the Reading Chronicle about him, following his journey since his illustrious career with us. The following week will be dedicated to Paul Brayson.

Tbf, Brayson found his correct level soon afterwards.

Scored (and still does score) sh1t loads in non-league circles 200 goals +

Currently player-manager for Newcastle Benfield I believe.....and still playing and still scoring, (think NB were only a game away from Wembley under his charge recently).

Right player, wrong time, wrong player, shite time?

Am I sensing a hint of sarcasm?

Energy drinks sounds like a cushy enough number to me.

Hehe :)

The question was originally a joke but I actually found it interesting to see what he's up to thanks!

Good move for Liverpool not so good for Alex ... he'd earn more but he'd hardly play.

Always a funny one McCarthy - has had some great spells at the Prem clubs he’s been at but then gets dropped. Been very good for Saints this season but then dropped for Gunn, who’s looked pretty ropey from what I’ve seen.

Is there a mentality or motivation issue with him?

Always thought he was underrated at us. Always thought he was better than Federici (bar kicking). Both great keepers but surprisingly McCarthy is rarely mentioned

On the contrary, McCarthy could not put a foot wrong...even when he did (if those seated around me, were anything to go by). He was younger then and still learning his trade...and as you allude to, his distribution was way inferior to Feds.

Time has moved on....and so has he ...several times.

A good move for any second string goalie

i always rated McCarthy, I'd have him at Shaka levels. It was shame his kicking was fairly ordinary. One on one I think he was the best keeper I've seen play for Reading, unlike AAH who was terrible coming off his line.

Agreed - it was due to Fedder’s popularity that he went under the radar. But in the Prem games he played he was superb, and he was decent in 13/14. The fact he’s currently a Prem keeper whilst Federici is not even a first choice Champ keeper shows he was the better of the 2

I mean, it isn't the only difference, there is 5 years between the two.
