Go on then. I'm going to Hull or sit in C1871. You will meet the same fate as the rest of them.

You'll flick beer at him and get arrested?

If he's anything like he is on here I will merely look at him and he will go squeeling to the stewarts.

Lol get the stewarts on him.

I am probably mad but based on seeing him play over a number of years, especially when he was younger I have gone for Adam.

I can see that for one season only he could be like another Ian Harte. I am hoping that he can help the younger players with his experience and have a few games where he is the midfield maestro and we are all lauding his skills on BBCRB.

Still 2/1 clear favourites with William Hill for relegation.

tmesis Have we ever made an expensive signing who wasn't a flop?

I'm sure we must have done, but I'm struggling to think of any.

In relative terms, yes; didn't Lita break our then transfer record?

And before that iirc Caskey at 750K. Ended up not a bad player.

“Big money” moves to Reading since 1985

Hurlock - success
Canoville - success
Curle - success
Moran - flop
Maskell - success
Meaker - flop
Caskey - success
Asaba - success
Butler - success
Lita - success
Halford - flop
Fae - flop
Aluko - flop
Joao - ?
Puscas - ?

All in all not too bad until 2005 but since then it’s been a bit of a disaster.

You missed Mills, who was a qualified success. Lita was pretty good; if he hadn't been in a squad of legends he'd probably be remembered in better light.

Nice work, but Carl Asaba was a big flop and Canoville was about a 50K signing which wasn’t considered big. I think Parky was only 50K from Bury. Always remember saying how cheap he was at the time

Asaba played in an awful relegation bound team yet still managed to be leading scorer on 13 goals before falling out of favour under Tommy so I would suggest he was a success for the club esp. when the outlay was more or less recouped when he was sold to Gillingham.

Canoville cost £60k which was big money for Reading at the time.

Didn’t realise Asaba scored that many so, yes should be considered a success. Thought he was crap though. He just never seemed to fit in at Elm park

Calling Asaba a success is a bit much. He scored 11(?) goals, we got relegated and then he fecked off.

He's a nailed on failure.

Lita only really a partial success.

Curle – success - October 1987 for £150,000 / sold for £500,000 in 1988 / 40 apps (defender)
Moran – flop – 1886 for £250,000 / sold 1991 / 116 apps / 30 goals (striker)
Maskell – success – Fee? 1990 – 1992 / 72 apps / 99 goals (striker)
Meaker – flop – July 1995 paid £500,000 / moved on 1998 / 67 apps / 2 goals (midfield)

Asaba – success 19987 to 1998 paid £800,00 / sold for £590,000 / 33 apps / 8 goals. After failing to make an impact at Reading (wiki)
Butler – success – 2000 we paid £700,000 / left 2003 / 103 apps / 32 goals
Lita – success 2005 paid £1m / 2009 free / 83 apps / 20 goals / striker
Halford – flop – 2007 for a rumoured £2.2m / 2007 sold 2.5m / 3 apps / 0 goals / defender

I don't think I'd call Maskell a success either.

Steve Moran & Billy Whitehurst were a big money pairing that both flopped badly.

You could also count players who were expensive in terms in wages, even if they didn't come for a big fee.

Overall though, if we ever "splash the cash" there's always a feeling that it's going to end very badly.
