MATCHWATCH : Wycombe Wanderers (a) sponsored by Lawrie Sanchez

by Sutekh » 11 Aug 2019 09:04

When : Tuesday, 13th August, 7.45pm
Where : Hillbottom Rd, High Wycombe, HP12 4HJ
Capacity : 10,137
Away Stand : One end of the ground in the Dreams Stand

League Cup again. This time a trip just up he road to the nearest league club to Reading but yet still never really seen as a derby game even when the two clubs shared a few seasons back in the late 90s/early 00s.

As is usual over the last couple of seasons, Wycombe are yet another opponent with more league points than Reading having claimed a win and draw from their two games. They will also be right up for it and probably wouldn't be a surprise if there was a certain belief in their ranks that can win the game so certainly expect a ton of fight and a load of battering from them on the night.

Reading's new look squad will continue development with some more alterations to the starting line up. Not sure whether it'll be wholesale changes or just a bit of tweaking to try and find a balanced solution to the issue of just what is the best permutation from the available squad.

As far as I know other than Obita only Blackett is injured although he should be nearing availability. I think I would expect starts for those Reading players short on fitness so Rafael, Ejaria, Morrison and probably McIntyre may well feature. Wycombe have Adam El Abd and the big hulking threat that is Akinfenwa in their ranks and with Gareth Ainsworth at the helm will be suitably wound up to take the game the Reading so let's hope it's not another poor result that leaves everyone even more worried about the playing state of the club.

Referee

Darren England gets his first shot at a cup game with Reading.

Previously

02 Mar 2019 > Ipswich Town1-2 Reading
06 Oct 2018 > West Bromwich Albion 4-1 Reading
25 Aug 2018 > Aston Villa 1-1 Reading
13 Jan 2018 > Hull City 0-0 Reading

Historically

Reading have previous in the League Cup against Wycombe having been beaten 3-1 on aggregate back in 1996 (1-1 at Elm Park and 0-2 at Adams Park) back in the days when Reading were in Division 2 and Wycombe in Division 3 so let's hope there's no repetition.

The only other cup game resulted in a 2-1 FA Cup win for Reading at Loakes Park back in January 1977

League wise Reading have won 6 and lost only 1 of the 8 games played to date but all the dropped points have been at Adams Park.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use an iFollow subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

So do we consider this a good game to blood some new players or a good game to play some of the 3rd choice players? Maybe a mix?

Maybe:
--------------------Rafael
Howe--Morrison--McIntyre--Richards
-----------------Pele---Adam
Ejaria-------------Olise--------------Barrett
-------------------Puscas

?

We are in a tough position now for players like Barrett, Olise and Loader. How do we keep them playing? Barrett deserves some game time and did assist our first goal. Banishing him again would be harsh.

Team?

.......................Rafael
..Howe, Morrison, McIntyre, Richards
....................Adam, Pele
Olise.............., Ejaria ...............Barrett
.........................Puscas

Walker, Moore, Yiadom, Rinomhota, East, Joao, Meite

We're likely to need to rotate a fair bit this season, so let's give out as many appearances as possible to those outside the current first XI.

See who performs and blend them in for the current first XI poor performers. Fully expect far fewer changes. Rafael has to be a certainty. Expect at least one CB change. Opportunity to test Adam over 90 minutes etc.

I think we have to play the newcomers if possible, at least for 45-60 minutes

League has to be priority and this is a great "gelling" opportunity

Rafael, Morrison need to play.

Yep need to blood the new boys AND play the young fringe lads. So I’d expect Moore, Miazga, Meite, Swift etc to all be rested

Yep - but was December 1976. Remember going on the coaches and something odd happened on the way - but can't remember what.

Cue endless sh1T jokes obvs - anyone recall the real thing?

I wouldnt start Olise and Barrett in a game we need to win to get some momentum from. I'd put them on the bench and give them a run out if we're winning the game

Ejaria is lacking fitness at the moment. He might make the squad for Sunday though.

I don't think beating Wycombe is going to kick start our season, or that Barrett and Olise can't contribute towards a win.

It's a free hit to try stuff, no importance.

I think there will be some pissed off fans and more pressure to get something against Cardiff if we lose this one. Gomes has been well backed and our away record under him is atrocious. 1 away win in 14 I believe

One of the away defeats was Man U, his record away in the league is 1-6-6. not great but far from disasterous.
