The next 6 games.

by windermereROYAL » 22 Sep 2019 09:44

Pretty horrendous league run coming up against current form teams
Swansea A
Fulham H
Bristol city A
Preston H
QPR A
Forest A

Fully expect us to be bottom 3 after that lot, would rip your arm off for 8-10 points but expect 4-6 somehow.

That’s a horrible batch of games with only two home matches and seemingly all in form teams. I would be happy with 6 points from that lot.

As well, we have a terrible record at Swansea, Forest and QPR

Haven't won at Loftus Road (or whatever they call it now) since 2014 (0-3-1)
Haven't won at Forest since 2013 (0-1-4)
Both of those coincidentally in the same season
We never seem to beat Swansea home or away

Fulham and Preston are two massive games

Our level of performance for those games looks baffling right now. There seems to be a lot of hopelessness and despair right now, but just 3 weeks ago we were looking good. I'm going to be bold. 9 points from these 6; we'll recapture some form

As always happens on HNA, a couple of poor results and we'll lose every game. A couple of good ones and we'll win them all.

Expect us to pick up around a point a game give or take a couple. A surprise win or two and we'll be hailed as world beaters again.

Will we be better against teams that want to play football rather than have a tight set up, making life difficult for us, rather than concentrating on winning the game themselves? We’ve really struggled in the past few seasons against organised teams at the Madejski. Our best performances at home have been against teams looking to win the game generally rather than those that look to stop us from playing. Equally we’ve looked poor against really good teams too last season like Leeds. So it’s a small group of teams that must be very poorly coached if their managers don’t see how easy we are to beat.

Still keeping the faith. Really don’t want to see yet another managerial change and would prefer to give Gomes time to get things sorted out

The last few weeks have been very disappointing, but the reality is supporting this club has been dire for most of the past 5 or so years. The only bright points have been 16/17 where we somehow finished third despite dull, dour, uninspiring football and the change in atmosphere since Gomes joined. The emotions and feelings around the club have been transformed under him; he deserves until Christmas at least.

Many more performances like Saturday and the atmosphere won't last.

Happily, whilst I think it's looking like another difficult season we do still have a better squad and are playing better in general. We'll have rough patches quite often but should get just enough results to tide us over.

I know not everyone loves XG, but it's a pretty good indicator of how a team is doing. Swansea, currently sat in 2nd place, are wildly overachieving:

We are underachieving, so perhaps this game is there for the taking...

As someone said last week, we don’t want to become like Brentford with regards to XG. Their XG stats are consistently one of the highest in the league and they always sit in mid table

Sounds like we do want to be like Brentford then.

Yet another international break in the middle of that lot.

By the end of that run we will be at the 14 game mark - which usually gives a rough idea on what half of the table we will finish.

Fully expecting the fans will all be told to be patient as we linger round the drop zone. All feels so familiar!

We'll probably end up winning half of those - we have the players capable of doing so but equally would not be surprised if we lose 5 of them.

We simply have to figure out how to get back in a game if we concede first else it is going to be a long, long season.

Well at least Gomes is slowly figuring out what doesnt work when we are 1 down.

I reckon a switch to a 4-3-3 which 2 wide forwards is the answer. Bring on Meite and Barrett.

I still don't really understand why Gomes found a formula with a reasonable amount of success last season and then threw it in the bin having stuck with it for half of pre-season. And then changed again about two games into the season to yet another one.

Why do we never work to a plan and build on that plan. Why is everything so disorganised and disjointed.

Dunno. We didnt exactly buy the players for the system we were playing. Bit striker heavy focus in the old transfer window.

Like we didn't have a plan.

I wouldn’t want to become a team who consistently sit in mid table and get bullied in the majority of their away games. This season and perhaps the next, that’s fine but they never seem to make any progress, yet they consistently find themselves one of the top teams in the XG rankings
