MATCHWATCH : Luton Town (h) sponsored by Dean Morgan

by Sutekh » 12 Sep 2020 17:10

When : Tuesday 15th September 2020, 6pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Luton Town next in the second round of the league cup and with a visit from (mostly) ManU’s fringe first teamers awaiting the winners there’s going to be plenty to play for (and maybe even a bit of belief for the winners that a shock might be possible in round 3).

But let’s not get distracted, Luton will be out to give a good account of themselves and what better way of avenging the 0-5 that they suffered a couple of months ago than by turning the tables on their hosts. And they are capable, having already dumped former PL side Norwich out of the competition.

After the opening day, both Reading (at Derby) and Luton (at Barnsley) won so both teams still have a 100% record. Expecting Reading to field a strongish side but will be a higher proportion of the younger players as there were v Colchester.

Most important question to be answered though is will Reading’s home form start to show decent improvement on the utter **** that has bedevilled the club for the last 3 years?

Referee

Charles "first Reading game" Breakspear, from Surrey.

Historically

Three previous league cup ties against the hatters. Last time out was a 5-1 romp at the Mad Stad back in 2008 and the one before that was a 4-0 romp back in 2001, also at the Mad Stad. The tie before that was back in1980 when Luton won a two legged affair by 2-0 at Elm Park after a 1-1 at Kenilworth Road.

How to follow the game

  1. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  2. Ring/text a mate for updates
  3. Use an iFollow subscription
  4. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Jinx Alert

IF we win this...

When was the last time RFC won their opening three games?

Second question

For official WWD stats, if we win on pens did we “win our first three games” or not?

No. Penalties is not a win, it's a draw with the tie resolved by penalties.

2001/02 two league, one cup

Presuming we'll be going with a changed side again.

....................Southwood
.Araruna, Moore, McIntyre, Bristow
..................Laurent, Swift
.....Olise..........Ejaria...........Baldock
.......................Puscas

Terrified of risking Joao and we really need to see if we can work without him. Also need to give Laurent games while testing how we cope without both him and Rino.

Think maybe Ejaria will get a rest after he went off, guess it depends what it was, knock or strain

Want to see Puscas!

Joao’s form in the past two games may also focus Puscas mind a little he need to sharpen up and earn a place in the team not just expect it. Has great potential but just need to deliver more reliable perf9amnces not just the odd good game

That's a fair shout.

Looked like a pull, no one touched him, so can't be a knock. Hopefully just a tweak or cramp.

It’s a win.
Same way as a win after extra time is a win.....
The team that progresses in a cup tie is by definition the winner.

Fraid not. Check out our result against Wycombe in the cup last season on Soccerbase for example.

It's a D*

Nope, it’s a win. Soccerbase is not a definitive source.

EFL cup regulation 14.4

‘14 Laws of the Game 14.4 In the event of the scores being level at the end of ninety minutes' play in Rounds One, Two, Three, Four and Five no extra time shall be played, and the winners shall be determined by the taking of kicks from the penalty mark in accordance with procedures as approved by IFAB.’

If the use of penalties is to decide the winners then by definition it is a ‘win’ !

But I’d agree it’s a very arguable point and if you wanted to be very picky you could distinguish between winning the game and winning the tie. However you would have to exclude a win after extra time (if it was in use) as a win, which seems a bit weird.

Something similar to Snowies team. Resting Ejaria could be wise. Maybe Aluko...

I’d rest Ejaria and Joao.

Give aluko a go, why not, away from the league see if he puts in effort and does anything

Yeah, I'm very much "fool me once.." on him but I cant really see a good reason not to use him this game. He plays the same position so give him a go and fingers crossed he does well.

It's a no-brainer.

He will be motivated to impress. If he does that will be three very decent
appearances and it will look like we have a new, useful squad player.

If he does and we DO want rid, it will be a lot easier to shift him.

And if he is crap it will make the moaners happy cos they can say, "I told you so."

I am one of those moaners. I dont want to misrepresent myself here. I think he has been up there with our clubs worst ever signings. Perhaps worse than Emerse Fae. But in this situation, if we continue with this set up and Pauno doesn't want to tinker a bit, it makes perfect sense to rest important players and give him 90 minutes.

1. He might surprise us.

2. As you say, he might be motivated to prove a point.

And 3. It gives us an invaluable opportunity to rest players for league games which take an incalculable priority this season.

Aluko vs Fae

Fae:

- signed for Premier League
- one third the price
- no memorable performances (11 matches)
- refused to play for the reserves
- left quickly and we recouped the fee

Aluko:

- signed for the Championship
- three times the price
- four goals and a few good games on top of that (60 appearances to date)
- has never caused significant trouble
- hung around for ages, very unlikely we’ll recoup anything close to his fee even including the inflated loan fee we got from a sister club

No contest for me.

The tale of the tape nobody asked for or needed to see. Cheers.
