150th Anniversary Thread - 2021/22

by royalp-we » 19 Jan 2021 09:13

Today, we are unveiling the branding for our 150th anniversary season. It’s uncomplicated, but the concept was carved out by those who originally designed our current badge - and it delivers a little bit of added prestige to our current crest whilst paying homage to all that has gone before to make this a club we all love today.

So as 2021 whirs into action, our 150th anniversary plans can start to take shape.

Really like the special crest. The oldest football club in the South. Sounds like the club also has some great plans to allow fans to celebrate 150yrs of our tinpot existence.

Cool. Looking forward to seeing what the club has planned. The crest is nice, simple and understated.

Very much looking forward to the home and away kits next season to see what they have designed.

Brilliant.

Apparently, because we're reached 150 years we won't ever have to change to an away kit if we don't want to from now on.

Optimistic that the club will do a good job on this. What I have seen on the mural is impressive and will be interesting to see what else they have planned.
Quite amazing that fans of the newer clubs accuse us of having no history .....

I would like to think the home kit will be a homage to the first kit worn by Reading FC.

Saw someone on twitter suggest a gold and white hooped third kit. That would be incredible x

Sort of blue and white hoops affair ?
There were some replicas of the original shirt done when we moved out of EP.
Would be nice to have a modern version, but also like the gold hoops idea, even if just as a one off.

Nice crest and its great the club has plans in place.

Lets hope the team do the business, we were relegated to the 4th division in our centenary year in 1971.

Crest is more Sepia than Gold, I would suggest... which would be in keeping with the "good old days"

As we were founded on Christmas Day 1871, I take it our Boxing Day match next year will be the big 150th anniversary game. Hopefully it will be a better spectacle than the travesty that was the 2-1 home defeat to Burton on our 500th Madejski Stadium game celebration.

like the crest, well played RFC.

I was at the inauguration in 1871, with RL. Her coach and horses got highwaymanned just outside Woolhampton, on the way back to Swindon.

There's no actual evidence to support this claim - even though it's repeated in various internet places that doesn't make it true.

In fact Christmas Day is one of the least likely days for a large group of young, Christian, church-going men to leave their family homes and parents on a dark afternoon / evening to go out and found a football club!

Many have looked for an actual foundation date but none have found one.

If a particular and true date is desired for celebration purposes then 21 February - the date of our first match in 1872 - would probably be the one to go for.

I'm sure I've read somewhere (Biscuits and Royals? cannot find it to check) that the inaugural meeting was a lot earlier in Jan 1871

Yes you have. However that was written nearly 40 years ago and subsequent research would suggest that date is highly implausible .

As I understand it there was definitely a meeting at some point in 1871 to form the club, I thought that meeting was in the February of that year meaning the club would actually turn 150 next month, however I don’t think there is any actual confirmation of the date extant anywhere.

Given the earlier date came from club historian David Downes he must have had some kind of evidence?
