Next 10 games

by WoodleyRoyal » 17 Feb 2021 22:51

I know I know we only have 16 games left so of course the next ten games are crucial, every game is now. And I know we have had loads of the ‘next 6 games’ threads, but I’m going to say it anyway  the next 10 games are crucial.

I posted on the rival watch thread the next 10 games and they are as follows

Boro (h)
Wycombe (a)
Rotherham (a)
Blackburn (h)
Sheff wed (h)
Forest (a)
Birmingham (a)
QPR (h)
Barnsley (a)
Derby (h)

We are basically now playing (other than boro and Blackburn) bottom half teams and. I think we could and should get 25 points from the possible 30. I was told I’m being way too optimistic :D , maybe I am. But 25 points would put us on 76 points with 6 games to play. Of which, two are against Luton and Huddersfield. How many points do you think we will get from these 10 fixtures.

Seeing we cant get 25 points from 10 games with 7 wins you are suggesting we should win 8 and draw 1, thats a big ask and overly opimistic even if we are playing teams from the lower half. I`ll be happy with 20-22, that will be a great return.

Be disappointed if we haven't just about nailed a PO spot after that run of games

Basically we need to win every other game to get in the top 6. Think we should manage that. Will go for about 20 points from those 10

W - Boro (h) - Form-wise we should win, but I could see us losing this one
W - Wycombe (a) - Form-wise we should win, but I could see us dropping points. Wycombe are fighters
D - Rotherham (a) - League position isn't everything. Rotherham are no push-overs. I feel sure we won't win all 3 games

W - Blackburn (h) - Could frankly be anything. Blackburn could be virtually out of things and play with freedom
W - Sheff Wed (h) - Every game I look at 9so far) I can see reasons to drop points. But have to say win
L - Forest (a) - They are improving, Would be happy if we draw there

W - Birmingham (a) - We could win, we do get wins there, but we were locked on to win at home... worry about this one
D - QPR (h) - QPR are starting to play and a bit of a bogey side for us. We could easily lose this.
L - Barnsley (a) - If Barnsley are still creeping up the table this will be very tough. happy with a draw

L - Derby (h) - Rooney appears to be getting it right. I would be ecstatic if we won, but think we might lose this one.

17 from 10 but I think that's optimistic. IF we could win the next three I could believe again, but it is beginning to look like we are scheduled to be 5th or overtaken by BMTH

We seem to be vying with Bournemouth for who will finish 5th/6th. Norwich, despite me thinking they aren't as good as Swansea or Brentford are sneaking away. Nice to think that second is up for grabs, still. Are Brentford going to have another wobble? Will Swansea win their games in hand? And Watford finally seem to be putting a run together.

Form/performance level is more of a reliable indication than league position I’d say. Personally, I think we’d do well to pick up 6 pts against Rotherham & Wycombe. You’d prefer to face Huddersfield & Stoke instead right now.

Derby, Forest & Sheff Wed will all pose bigger threats to us than earlier in the season.

But it’s still quite a favourable run compared to the other sides around us, so I’d expect us to stay around 5th-6th at the end of that run.

I think the gap between 6th & 7th-9th to reduce but not significantly enough to necessarily affect us

I can’t believe Swansea are where they are in the League. They really are very limited.Luton have done very well also;given their player budget.

I've got 19 points and haven't been overly optimistic...that will pretty much guarantee the play offs with a win against either Hudds or Luton in last 6.

Using last year as the benchmark, after 40 games gone (hence after these next 10 games), 6th place had 61 points, and 2nd place had 71 points, with us currently sitting on 51. Seems rather much on the low side but still an indicator of whereabouts we’ll need to be

Think we’ll pick up about 17/18 points here which you’d say should be enough to get through on the last few games. Really got to be looking at 24/25 IMO for automatics which may be a bit out of our reach

So going on current form (6 games) our opponents in the next 10 are as follows in the form table:

Boro (h) - 20th
Wycombe (a) - 21st
Rotherham (a) - 9th
Blackburn (h) - 14th
Sheff wed (h) - 10th
Forest (a) - 11th
Birmingham (a) - 24th
QPR (h) - 2nd
Barnsley (a) - 13th
Derby (h) - 3rd

For comparison, we are 12th. - So half our opponents currently in better form that us and the other not.

Obviously this will change as we come to play them but suggests we should be targetting maximum points over the next 2 and Rotherham maybe trickier than we would like.

2/3s point haul return. Which is slightly higher than our current seasons PPG of 1.70 (stats)

There is definitely some banana skins in there, we just have to hope Velcro has everyone focussed. Which shouldn't be hard right now!

over the last 10 years, an average of 87.7 points was needed to get 2nd place.
over the last 10 years, an average of 74.1 points was required for a playoff place in 6th position

Leicester scraped into the playoffs on 68 points the lowest tally in the last 10 years, back in 2013
Fulham back in 2017 finished on 80 points and finished 6th the highest points tally for 6th in the last 10 years

Hull have the lowest point total for 2nd place in the last 10 year back in 2013 with 79 points
Brighton and Burnley both got 93 points in 2017 and 2013 respectively. The highest point total for a 2nd place finishes in the last 10 years.

If we average 2 points a game for the remaining 16 games we will finish on 83 points, 4.7 shy of the average needed for second place.
if we want to get to finish in the playoff we need to run at 1.4 points per game to reach the average points required for a minimum 6th place finish.

So all we need to do is win the next 10 and beat both Huddersfield and Luton and that will give us our 87 points required, simples.

Just beat Boro 3-0 and cheer me up. If we win a few more points, fine.
