Agreed, it's not done. We need to win on Friday.

I have a feeling we will go to the final day 2 points behind either Barnsley or Bournemouth. Probably wrong but hey ho.

Had a look the other day on how teams who finish 7th fair the following season. Not pretty.

Swansea’s last 6 games last season was largely against poor to indifferent sides with nothing to play for aside from a home game with Leeds (which Swansea lost) and a trip to an out of form Forest (drawn) the key there was the pure cr@pness of both Reading and Forest on the final day.

Reading’s remaining games sees them play last chance just gone Cardiff, nothing to play for Luton, everything to play for Swansea, home and hosed title winners Norwich and nothing to play for Huddersfield. Reading realistically are going to need 10 points at a minimum from that lot to stand a chance of making the playoffs and hope someone above them falls apart.

All that said though a win over Cardiff and a result or two going Reading’s way on Saturday will see squeaky posteriors starting to reappear in the play off positions.

Yep. Not time to write it now but over the last 6 or 7 seasons, every side finishing 7th has gone on to finish 13th or lower the next.

Tbh, 13th, 14th, 15th would be fine for a couple seasons while we continue to trim the obscene wage bill and come back leaner and meaner.

Oh yeah, would have no major concern with that just found it interesting* that if we do just miss out we'd have to buck a fairly settled trend to improve on 7th next year.

Would you be happy if we dropped into league 2 if it made us leaner and meaner?

I don't think Swansea will have anything to play for, they will be nailed on playoffs by then with no no chance of the autos.. can see them resting key players.

If we win Friday the pressure on Bournemouth and Barnsley is ramped up considerably - particularly with Bournemouth an Norwich

I'm suspicious of that sort of trend, it's just to easy to be statistical noise. But yeah, ultimate disappointment can lead to a drop off.

I need to look at it more when I can be arsed but imagine in most cases the side finishing 7th have tailed off at the end of the season, so start the next poorly and either fail to recover or do so enough to br comfortably mid-table.

When yer luck isn't in...

Look at last season's sixth place versus this season's seventh

46 18 16 12 62 53 +09 70 Swansea 2019-20
46 19 13 14 62 54 +08 70 Reading- 2020-21

Reading won one more game, identical points, same goals-scored, but conceded a single extra goal,
so though we "matched" Swansea's finish last year we would have missed out to them by GD

Remarkably similar seasons, though

Yes but Swansea were lucky to make top six with such a low points total. It’s well below average for sixth place. You can’t expect to make the play offs in relegation form during the run in.

13 draws through the season - yet 7 of those were in our last 11 games - hence just 6 draws in our first 35 games

IMO we became too afraid of losing games towards the end of the season - and didn't push hard enough for the win. Bringing Semedo on for Olise against QPR and Barnsley, for example, whilst we were drawing them both - with attacking options on the bench gives substance to that. Ditto waiting to bring Aluko and co on only once we were losing

yep winning 23 games and losing 23 gives 69

So win 25, lose 21 gets you 75 points and the PO's

Generally agree though Swansea were also in dreadful form over the last 11 games - managing just 11 points and now have one foot at Wembley.

Agreed, in retrospect, I would rather we pushed harder to win some of those game as losing will have made very little difference bar maybe finishing 8th instead.

Having said that, in most of those draws we created and missed some pretty decent chances that, if taken, may have got us in, or certainly a little closer to the top 6 points wise.

Yep. We were too cautious with the subs in must win games
