Contract situation at end of 2020/21 season.

by andrew1957 » 26 Apr 2021 15:00

We have a lot of players out of contract at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether the FFP rules will allow us to re-sign the likes of Southwood, Morrison and McIntyre.

I make it we only have 14 senior players left currently under contract for next season:

3 years left - Puscas and Ejaria

2 years left - Moore, Meite and Jaoa

1 year left - Olise, Cabral, Yiadom, Holmes, Rino, Laurent, Araruna, Swift and McNulty

It seems to me we have an awful lot of work to do to create a competitive squad for next season bearing in mind that Olise is almost certain to go and several other key players only have a year left.

Things look quite grim to me.

Christ how has Moor3 still got 2 years left.

Holmes Rino and Laurent the only ones I'd be in a rush to extend.

Meant of those with 1+ year remaining.

Morro, McIntyre like a shot.

Olise if he doesn't go of course.

Swift (arguably our best player when fit), Yiadom (most on her usually rave about him), Cabral (good keeper at Championship level) ?????

“When fit” being the operative words

No point basing a team around someone who’s so injury prone. Could argue the same for Yiadom too, and I’m not sure he’s as good as people make out anyway

Swift needs to show he can go half a season without a serious injury IMO.

Yiadom also very injury prone, 29 and I'd rather a fullback who is looking to cross.

Cabral is 30, potentially expensive and only good at this point, bot great for me.

Basically secure the young ones longer term and the older and injury prone ones need to demonstrate they're still good for at least another year through the first half of next season.

Thing about Swift is I don't think you need to base a team around him like we ended up doing with Joao, he'll just slot on wherever, deep role, advanced role and just create good chances and be a reliable set piece taker.

There is a flip side to this of the residual value of the player aswell,
Because the player is of value if under contract Olise, Holmes, Rino, Laurent and Mcintyre if possible must be signed to longer term 3 or 4 year contracts as they make them more valuable if someone did want to buy them and also if they are not they are the future of our team.
Moore and Meite and Joao should be either moved on this year or given another year extension to protect them from running into the last year of there contract the following season.

Morrison deserves another year at this level with an extension based on appearances next year if he plays 25+ games staying fit enough give him another year he is not a high earner and a great squad player.

Puscas and Ejaria are fine.

Cabral and Yiadom should be moved to 2 years with a third on appearances aswell.

the rest can do one play the youth, sign a LB , wide player and CM cover and job done.

Personally I would be looking at Adam Reach from Weds who is out of contract at the end of the season plays LW scoring and setting up 4 he is out of contract and can also cover LB.
Amiri'i Bell of Blackburn 26 LB free transfer knows the league and not on massive wages.
and for CM if they don't get promoted Alex Mowatt from Barnsley would be a dream on a free a proper talisman of a midfielder.

but this obviously is if we can sign anyone at all.

I’d look to extend Yiadom for another year along with Swift

Rafael nope. Expensive for what he is.

McIntyre, Holmes, Rino, Laurent Olise all offered significant increases and another 2-3 years

Morro, southwood 1 year extension

The rest can do one

That’s harsh on Tetek imo.

Offload Puscas. Little point in a £9 million striker warming the bench.

I've read what you have all said and this would be my way of doing it:

Sell Moore and Puscas. Something has happened to Moore. It's as if his agent is whispering sweet nothings into his head. He's not been the same for a while.
Puscas - 9m worth of striker on the bench as someone has already said, no need for him to warm the bench. He's done ok, but for 9m, it's not enough. Not entirely his fault, but it looks as if Bowen had and Porno has no idea how to play the guy. He's not a João.

Keep Morro on for another year. His experience his good. Offer him a coaching position at the end of his contract.

TMac, Holmes, Rhino, Laurent, Swift, Olise etc (we know which players I mean) should be signed up for a longer period (2-3 years).

Tetek etc with a lot of talent - keep!!! This kid could become real quality. He looks confident. Porno knows him (from the U19 WC, I think). Develop the youngsters and really give them belief they can break through.

Aluko, Baldock etc - get rid.

With Norwich and Watford (and maybe Bournemouth) going up could we be able to offer better contracts to Tmac etc?

My understanding is their remaining parachute payments are distributed to the remaining clubs in the championship when promoted back to the premier league.

Will also make a more level playing field with less clubs with parachute payments next season.
