Fate?

1920-21 our 50th anniversary we finished 3rd from bottom of division 3 South and I believe this was the only time the club has had to appeal for re election, fortunately in those days it was bit of a closed shop so the bottom 3 survived.
1970-71 season our 100th anniversary we were relegated from the third to the 4th Division on goal difference.

Well except you're a year early in both circumstances.
1921-22: 13th
1971-72: 16th

So kinda underwhelming seasons but no relegation.

This doesn’t overly concern me as we approach the new season

1971-72 does remain our lowest ever league finish though...

But in 2020-21 Reading finished 7th in Division 2 so the comparative “anniversary” season to those has already been and gone.

As per earlier post

1921-22 Division 3S (13th)
1971-72 Division 4 (16th)
2021-22 ?

What you can say though is that seasons that involve Reading’s anniversary year, and are divisible by 50, are pretty lousy. Well that’ll be something to look forward to then.

We’ve never had to apply for re-election. It was only the bottom two in Div 3S who needed to.

The bottom 3 had to reapply which in 1921 was Reading, Brentford and Gillingham.

The re-election process started in 1890 and until 1894 the bottom 4 clubs had to reapply.

Between 1895 and 1921 it was the bottom 3 clubs who had to go through the process.

From 1922 until 1958 it was the bottom 2 clubs in Division 3S and the bottom 2 in Division 3N.

From 1958, until the whole thing was finally scrapped in favour of automatic promotion/relegation with the non league world in 1986, the bottom 4 clubs in Division 4 had to “sweat” on getting returned.

Out of interest:

Hartlepool were the club that had to reapply the most in that time (14 occasions) but were successful every time.

The biggest “names” that have had to apply for re-election in their time are probably Blackpool and Preston North End.

From 1922 to 1986 thirteen clubs failed to retain their status:

1927 - Aberdare Athletic
1928 - Durham City
1929 - Ashington
1930 - Merthyr Town
1931 - Newport County
1931 - Nelson
1938 - Gillingham
1951 - New Brighton
1952 - Gateshead
1970 - Bradford Park Avenue
1972 - Barrow
1977 - Workington
1978 - Southport

I just feel there are three worse sides than us in the division: your Derbys, your Blackpools, your Coventrys...

It's correct. It was only ever the bottom two in each of Div 3 S and Div 3 N. When Div 4 came about in 1958-9 it was then the bottom four who had to re-apply.

Correct, Reading have never had to apply for re-election to Division 3S or Division 4 (or even Division 3N) as those divisions did not exist in season 1920-21. That season Reading were competing in Division 3.
