MATCHWATCH : Huddersfield Town (h)

by Sutekh » 19 Jan 2022 22:27

When : Saturday 22nd January 2022, 3pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Huddersfield are next in line to get their 3 points and they are a fairly decent team so, again, this will be no cakewalk (though I suspect Huddersfield might find it so) especially given Reading’s utterly ***** home form.

The level of the Terriers decency is very decent indeed at the moment, sat as they are in 7th place, and having had a free week will be nicely up for the the game. Form is also a major plus for them at the moment as they have not been defeated since 27th November and since then they’ve run up 7 games in the league producing 3 wins and 4 draws. They have also played and won at Burnley in the cup so it’s a game that’s really going to test even the most hardcore of Reading’s support.

Goals are reasonably spread around the Huddersfield squad with Danny Ward being the main threat on 7 goals from 23 starts so far, they have the usual threat from set plays through defender Matthew Pearson and plenty of threat in other areas via Danny Sinani, Duane Holmes and Sorba Thomas. Add to this a team that seems to be rarely disrupted by injuries or suspensions (8 players with 20+ starts so far) and the Reading management are going to have their work cut out to devise a tactic than gives a breakthrough.

Alex Vallejo is the only injury issue for the Town while Southwood is probably the only completely fit player that Reading have at the moment (we’ll probably find Yiadom and/or Rahman pulled a muscle or something carrying luggage back to their car, presuming they’re back in time).

Trying to be a bit more positive though, the return of our Ghanaians should at least give some better balance to defence and not mean quite so many players are having to “fill in”. And this wretched run has to end sometime doesn’t it ?

Referee

Change required. Real shake up needed.

..................Southwood
Yiadom, Holmes, Morrison, Rahman
.................Rinomhota
.........Laurent .........Bashiru
.......................Swift
..................Joao, Puscas

Fit your style to what you've got. High energy. Direct. Alternate playing through the middle with the full backs bending balls into the channels. Make the defence not know if they have to squeeze tight for the strikers dropping into space and playing with midfield or running off the shoulder in behind.

3 midfielders who will run all day. Help for Puscas to occupy multiple defenders rather than all sit on one attacker. Some actual first touch and vision in Joao.

No more fartarsing around with short passes going no where.

If Swift doesn't buck up, replace him with Camara. If Puscas is shit, stick on Clarke.

Won't happen. Same shit. Another defeat.

Nah it won’t be close to the lowest. We had about 6,000 for our game v Sheffield Utd during the fag end of the Stam era.

Pretty much agree but Holmes really needs to be dropped. He is really poor at the moment. Tempted to give Stickland a go if fit.....but I suspect he’s injured again.

Don't go, save yourself the expense and effort. Ask yourself if the owner, manager or players really deserve your support.

This all day long!! would be tempted to start Camara ahead of Swift as he's that badly off form right now. This would be our strongest side picked for month's and no excuses whatsoever!! There is no way that midfield should be getting bullied and should be full of running. I would be tempted to go long ball, and ping everything in Joao's direction and have Puscas picking up the pieces.

I agree Holmes has struggled, but I think with Morro alongside him and the fullbacks returned he'll steady.

Been under immense pressure with worse performances around him for ages.

We can’t be certain, I suppose it depends when Ghana are or have flown home.

We can only hope. If I was Pauno, I'd have been on the phone to them commiserating and asking them to get back asap.

yeah this. though I'm not a huge fan of the diamond in midfield so an alternative may be

Southwood
Holmes - Laurent - Morrison
Yiadom - Rino - Swift - TDB - Baba
Puscas - Joao

Which looks an ok set up to me, and one I'd go forward with generally. Play Swift a bit deeper, encourage the WBs further forward. Hopefully have one or two of Azeez, Hoilett, Hal, McIntyre, Ejaria, Tetek on the bench alongside Clarke and Camara as options.

Probably end up going to this as its actually convenient for me to do so. Certainly not expecting anything other than another shit performance and comfortable win for Huddersfield.
