Season 2022-23 date details

by Sutekh » 20 Apr 2022 08:55

The Football League will restart on 30 July 2022 (though there is likely to be a televised game on Friday 29 July) while the Premier League kicks off on 6 August 2022.

There will be a mid-season break in the Championship for the Qatar World Cup between 12 November and 10 December (the conclusion of the WC group stages).

As ever with the football authorities there is no synchronisation as the Premier League break runs from 12 November until 26 December while Leagues 1 and 2 (and below) are expected to carry on as normal with no break at all (and of course all of England’s games will clash with FL games).

The season will end (for all Football League divisions) on the weekend of 6-7 May 2023 with play off finals scheduled for the weekend of 27-29 May 2023. The Premier League ends on 28 May 2023.

The League Cup will begin on 8 August with the final on Sunday 26 February 2023.

The FA Cup Final is currently being proposed for 3 June 2023 and the European Cup/Champions League final is likely to be on 10 June 2023 but as yet these dates are unconfirmed.

Fixtures for the Premier League 2022/23 season will be released at 9am on Thursday 16 June 2022 with the Football League following suit exactly one week later on 23 June 2022.

Law changes for 2022/23 according to IFAB are detailed at the link below. Nothing really exciting just minor tweaking to the wording of a few laws. Biggest change seems to be that 5 substitutions (in three stoppages plus half time when it has been used) is now part of law 3 rather than being optional but the wording suggests it only appears to be for top divisions in countries where the competition rules allow it, so expect PL clubs to be voting on that again.

Not that Reading would ever find the time for 5 substutions anyway.

So in short, if we stay up the season looks like

1st game: 29th/30th July
Last game before WC: 12th November
Restart: 10th December
Final Game: 6th/7th May
Play-off final (if by some fluke): 29th May

There does still appear to be at least one International window scheduled for September - so imagine we will see a lot of 3 game weeks next year, as the season has only been extended by 1 week.

:?: England don't have any games scheduled for Saturday at 3pm, the only time that might happen is if they are runners up in the group (by which time everyone will have given up on them) and the 3rd placed play off game, which I'd hope nobody will watch

I'm pretty sure they have already voted on that law and agreed it.

Only 2 international breaks currently scheduled for 2022/23 other than the World Cup:

19–27 September 2022 &
20–28 March 2023

Cool - about 4 games from November will need to be played elsewhere then (based on this season's fixtures). 2 extra can be covered by the lack of an October break, 1 more by the earlier start and 1 extra midweek game.

Have they said if teams will be able to postpone matches if they've got players still at the World Cup?

I guess 3 players out for internationals is still the amount to trigger a postponement?

They don't get much of a break before pre-season then.

I wonder if we'll see the new kits earlier, as we're kicking off the new season end of July. Knowing us, no.

Initial details of pre-season announced too.

First team squad (what there is of it) will be back on the 20th June. So 3 weeks time. Ince said he wanted the bulk of the squad in place by then. We'll see - will be busy couple of weeks if so.

Off to St George's Park for a week, first week of July. Would imagine that will involve a friendly or two. 2 home friendlies expected to be announced shortly. One on the 22/23/24 July weekend, I would imagine.

I'm looking forward to see if we are able to get a lot of our squad in place by the time pre-season starts. You'd imagine that most players would have decided their futures by/before that date anyway, in terms of those we have offered contracts to.

14 pitches at St George's Park apparently so every first team player will get 2 pitches to use each

Maybe they have coordinated with some other club to be there the same time, so there's enough players to fill a team....

Weren't they supposed to bringing in a form of VAR to the championship next season? Also what happened to safe standing? And is the Green Park station open for start of season?

I think safe standing can be brought in should clubs want it from next season. Not sure Reading will be paying for the seats to be converted tbh.

The Green Park station will be opening for the start of the 2071/72 season.

Ooo, that's a tempter. Might take a trip over for that one.

EDIT - also people complaining about announcing friendlies when we don't have many players signed up. Because they club is only able to do 1 thing at a time, and we're 100% going to have not signed anyone in the next 7 weeks before this friendly.

those sort of comments are a cringe fest.

But yeah - i will be up for this - new ground. With Bowen going, this game was on the cards.
