Confirmed - Lumley Signs

by PATRIQT » 19 Jun 2022 11:40

First one over the line.

Lumley signs on loan for the season, and Boro fans reviews on him are woeful...

Welcome to the clown show, Jo.

Top marks for the new training shirt!

Not hugely excited about this, but then we get what we get in our position.

As a child, Lumley idolised keeper Shay Given especially during his days at Newcastle United. Lumley would spend hours imitating Given's saves in his back garden with brother Billy Lumley. His brother now lives in Australia and runs his own goalkeeper academy.

I can completely understand the scepticism around this, but on thing that seems to be overlooked is that this is signing that seems to have improved on one of our significant problem areas for our goalkeepers from last season, strength and a physical presence.

Lumley himself and P. Ince have both said we've signed a tall, strong goalkeeper with a presence which was a real area of concern last season. Question marks over how much of a "better" shot stopper he is than anyone we had last season, but he should be a massive improvement from set plays and crosses in general perhaps next season. I'm glad we've managed to sign someone that mitigates that somewhat.

One definite positive I can see about Ince's time is we've clearly highlighted the problem areas and we've got some way to looking to improve them as well, be it on and off the field.

Welcome and good luck Joe. You're going to be busy and frustrated.

Hope it works out.

Average keeper for this league but has a point to prove and hopefully he has some blinders.

Average is not a bad thing. If we can produce an ‘average’ side and deliver average performances we should be mid table come next May. I’ll take that !

If you listen to his interview he wants to play all 46 championship games.

Either he is mistaken or in the loan agreement Boro has said he can play versus them.

Every Reading fan wants Luke Southwood to do well but he clearly lacks presence and isn’t the finished article - had howlers against Hull, Derby, Huddersfield and we won’t mention the Fulham home game…

Lumley clearly had something about him before boro signed him up. I remember Brentford fans telling us that John Swift was rubbish and look how that worked out..

Judge a player once he pulls on the shirt. Best wishes to Joe Lumley on a successful career with the ding.

For all of us complaining about the errors from last season’s keepers, looks like we can expect to be complaining about a whole load more howlers.

There were a LOT of dreadful errors in there. I don’t just mean unlucky, could have done better or left stranded. I mean absolute howlers.

We'll see how he plays, but this could be worse business than Virginia based on that 'highlights' reel and the boro fan reviews of him.

Felt the same about Al Habsi before he joined. Turned out he did ok - Lumley additionally has age on his side too.
