Sutekh
The Royal Forester
Mr Angry There is no way the Authorities would retrospectively apply a points deduction after the end of a season; thats a massive lae suit waiting to happen!

Didn't that happen and the club (was it Wigan?) got relegated. I cannot remember when it was, or the offence, but it was only in the last season or two.

Wigan were sold in June 2020 but their new owners refused to invest money which caused the club to enter administration at the beginning of July 2020. The FL then stated the resulting 12 point deduction would be applied at the end of the 2019–20 season if the club finished outside the bottom three after 46 games. Wigan appealed the deduction after beating Hull 8-0, which guaranteed safety, but were finally relegated after then end of the season when the appeal was rejected and the points deducted.

.

With that evidence, I fully retract my earlier inaccurate post and apologise unreservedly to anyone affected by it. Thank you.

So do you think it’s safe to come out now? Will either club or FL mention it again - or might it be part of next season’s fun?

I put in the rumours section that the whole 23 March deadline definitely didn't apply to us.

Can one of the many people who are ITK tell me how long our suspended 6 points was suspended for (obvs I won't be at all surprised to find that the EFL didn't set a time and are happy to leave it as an eternal sword of Damocles)

That's what I thought, which made me ponder people saying we might get it next season

I think that's based on a misunderstanding that there was a deadline to apply this season last thursday.

It may be possible it could apply next season (or even after) if it's linked to issues last season, or this season, that are only identified after the season has been concluded.

It would be daft to write a penalty for failing to comply that can be prevented being applied by simply hiding the issue a few weeks.

End of this season (2022/23).

https://www.efl.com/news/2021/november/efl-statement-reading-football-club/

The Club is also subject to a suspended sanction of 6 points to be deducted from its season points total in Season 2021/22 (or Season 2022/23), on the first occasion on or before 30 June 2023.

Does that mean they can apply a deduction on this seasons total anytime up to the end of June?

that could be fun

It certainly reads that way - realistically fixtures come out on the 14th June, so would need to be done well before then.

Seems like it - we definitely need to finish 7 points above the bottom 3 come the end of the season, fun seen as we could well be safe comfortably by the time we play Huddersfield yet still potentially need points to "absolutely" confirm survival.

So we have another 3 months of speculation, worry, counter speculation, fear and uncertainty to come?

Good to know.......

Indeed - feasibly how much later in to the season they can leave it and be "fair" is open to question. You would hope they wouldn't leave any penalty to a point whereby the team have done enough to stay up i.e. 7pts clear with 1 game to go, then we get 6 deducted going into the final game.

Might liven up the often dull close season though, so swings and roundabouts.

What’s going on with this points deduction?

I guess there will be the usual Thurs press conf tomorrow, just hope the journos challenge the usual "I haven't heard anything" cr@p because I don't buy that now. The club must know what's going on and Ince must also given he's team manager.

Whilst I tend to agree, it is actually possible that they haven't heard anything substantive - esp if the Financial Controls Team at the EFL are going through the submissions in a forensic manner.

And to be honest, it's not as if Paul Ince is going say "...well, I shouldn't really say this, but I've heard we made some undeclared payments and we will be getting at least 6 points deducted."
