Depends on everyone's views of 'doing well'. Different people will ahve different expectations. If we get Mensah and whitehead I reckon we'll stay up and be hopefully around 14th or 15th, that would be excellent. A decent cup run maybe in the Carling Cup would be nice.

Think it'll all depend on the next month of signings.

Outside the top 4 to 6 teams, there is precious little quality in the premiership. If you look at Fulham/Charlton/Villa, only 2 or 3 of each of their players would make Reading's starting team. Two more quality signings and we'd all but be on par with the likes of Boro and West Ham. I hope.

"Touch and go"

I think with Steve Coppell here, we have every chance of staying up. He knows what it's all about after keeping Palace up and not only keeping them up, they enjoyed an FA Cup Final and finished 3rd (?).

You never know!!

does 'doing a Sunderland' mean breaking the points record and then finishing 7th in the Premier League?

Are we talking the Sunderland that went up and came back down with the lowest points ever...

Or the Sunderland that only went up with 105 points and finished seventh for two consecutive seasons.

I'm confident that Reading will stay in the Prem

Agreed - teams up for the first time (Swindon excepted) seem to do ok. Sunderland are just caught in a yo yo these days.

I'd like to think 15th is a very realistic expectation. A lot will depend if we get off to a good start, because October/November is not a friendly place for us....

I think it's definitely touch and go. Anyone that's saying with flying colours is letting their obvious Reading bias rule their heads. We COULD do a Wigan or West Ham, but some on here seem to think this is almost a foregone conclusion. I think we will finish about 16th and will be in a relegation dogfight at the end of the season.

I think the danger is that we will underestimate some of these.
Boro have Viduka,Downing, Schwartzer,Boateng,Mendieta,Huth,Yakubu and possibly Malbranque plus a load of improving youngsters.
Playing them first could be a good time especially with their change of managers.

It's a thread like this that is going to get the team moral down.

this is a realistic thread, im sure the team arent sitting there thinking "oh we've won the premiership". anyone who doesnt assess our chances and prepare properly is being stupid.

i think we're gonna be in a dog fight, but as royals we're used to being underdogs who wind up on top. 15th place finish please

I'm sure that the morals of this team are fine, after all, their disciplinary record last season was excellent. No, it's the morale I'm worried about.

I feel that this thread is slightly premature. Surely better to wait and see what if any new signings occur within the next 7 days or so. The game against Feyenoord should also provide a reasonable yardstick to judge our squad against quality opposition.

The current side oozes quality, from a Championship perspective, however, many of the established Prem sides are boosting their squads with some truly outstanding players. As things stand, I think we will cope, but there could be some nail-biting, especially in the late autumn.

One thing I am certain of is that we have the manager and back-room team to guide us safely home. I also believe in the motivation and fitness of the squad. That said, a classy defender, some midfield cover and dare I say, a roving striker would tip the balance in our favour, enabling a mid table finish at worst.

Touch and go

I think how well we go with injuries and I'm not sure our back-up is strong enough.

Keep clear of injuries and I think we'll stay up.

They are a determined bunch. Mentally strong.
