Realistic teams were competing with

Trying to be realistic here, these are the teams (IMO) were really up against (would love to be more positive)

Villa (In turmoil)
Charlton (Could improve under Dowie)
Fulham
Middlesboro (new manager, but money if needed)
Portsmouth (seem to be spending money)
sheff utd (Warnock still signing loads of strikers)
Watford (need a miracle)
Wigan (good first season, second season strugglers, ie ipswich)

Points from these

for me 25 points, means we need another 15 points from the others, just a random poll, sorry it didn't add 33+ (well I did but shagged it up)

The Villa game is a crucial one. They will have probably lost their first game (away to Arsenal) and if they lost their first home game to us the crowd will be on their backs.

For me, the home games are crucial and i feel we can beat most teams at home and hopefully scrape some points away.

We also have to be lucky with injuries.

With Villa we have to hope that LO'Learloly is still in charge come the start of the season as I think if they get a new manager they will be a team transformed.

i just see west ham as a team going from strength to strength really, i think there defence is quite good and they have loads of strikers with bag loads of talent. only weakness seems to be goalkeepers

From those 8, we need to beat all of them once and not lose to them all that often.

This is, imo, the key to survival.

Was I dreaming or did Exeter actually beat Fulham 1-0 in a preseason friendly?

It shows the enormity of our task that if we win all of our games against those opposition (which we won't) we will have only 48 points. Going to need some shock results somewhere.

Yes they did. And it means absolutely bugger all. We lost to Dorchester last year IIRC.

48pts will be more than enough to stay up. The most any team has gone down with is 42.

in light of teams we're competting against. who can we steal upsets against??

i reckon we could do the following :
Tottenham, who i really didnt think were all that when we played them in preseason, and didnt show the character to retain fourth
Bolton at home, i just think we can
Everton (?)
West Ham, just for the rivalry

Doesn't that depend on the teams fielded? Did we field a reserve team against Dorchester? :?

Apparently Jimmy Bullard came on for Fulham.

Yes, but we won't win all of those games. If we won 8, drew 4 and lost 4 of those matches we would have to be pretty satisfied. But that would leave us on 28 points. We will need some big results from somewhere.

What a strange thread.

IMO realistically, yes, we are against the bottom 8 sides in the prem, but I can see us getting points of every team, including the top 6.

Villa - 4
Boro - 2
Charlton - 2
Fulham - 3
Watford - 6
Sheffield - 6
Wigan - 2
Pompei - 4

so that's 29 points
With 2 losses.
