Jealousy

by Bowman's Quiver » 04 Aug 2006 20:21

I can't help but feel just the tiniest bit jealous about the kick-off of the new Football league season tomorrow. For the first time since 1920 Reading won't be playing in it.*

How bizarre. I think only now that I see us NOT involved with and against the teams we have been most familiar with over the last 84 years has our promotion finally sunk in for me.

*I'm sure I'll have gotten over it a fortnight from now

If your memory doesn't quite go back that far, we still have watford and sheffield utd for familiarity.

But I still can't quite come to terms with playing liverpool, man u, chelsea and arsenal yet so am still a bit starstruck. So long as the players don't feel overawed by the competition we will do fine.

But for old times sake I will be watching Leeds Norwich tomorrow and not care who wins ;)

Was thinking the same today as I watched Sky Sports News. Then Chris Kamara came on to give his "expert opinion" and I thought - thank fcuk I haven't got to listen to the Lionel-Richie-Wannabe for at least another 52 weeks.

Tell you what, having just watched the video posted on the other thread, I really won't miss the team having to play on some of those pitches come February!

Add to that Charlton, Manchester City and Newcastle. More than half the teams.

We've only played Newcastle in the cup in recent times (late 80's and early 90's).

We've been in the same league as Aston Villa back in 70-71 which I can just about remember.

Yes, my mistake. Scrap Newcastle. Still quite a few teams though.

We were in the same league as Villa as recently as about 1986/87 or 1987/88 season, can't remember exactly which

P.S. Very sunny here in Sweden today

I know what you mean. Am sorely tempted by Barnet v Torquay to fill the gap.

do you live in finchley !! ????
SO DO I
we must go and watch barnet together.. which I would say is just slightly more alluring ..and possibly 2 or 3 miles closer than the emirates stadium

there's always Hendon aswell , we might bump into Russell grant and the fat poof could tell our fortunes !

Good call. A trip to Underhill allows a sneaky pint in the Dignity beforehand.

Saw Barnet v Wycombe last year. Hessenthaler rolling back the years.

Also, Reading res v Arsenal res at Underhill in March 2007 I think.

I was there for that game too, because Reading - Palace was on the Friday night, and I have relatives in Barnet. It was a bore draw, and all I can remember is the sun being in my eyes the whole match and a bloke smoking a bifta in the stand.
