Information please

by iang040563 » 20 Aug 2006 12:02

I was just reading the league cup thread and people were asked what team would they like to be drawn against, and I said Accrington Stanley because we have not played them before. Are there any other teams we have not played? i cannot remember ever playing against Rochdale either in Cup or league

I've had the pleasure of watching us lose at Rochdale....twice....once it was 4-1.

Hard to imagine these days.

FFS mate, the world existed before the 1990's.

We've even played Scunthorpe at the Mad Stad

We played both Mansfield and Scunthorpe on a fairly regular basis during the 60s in the old Div3. I even remember us having played some (now)Conference teams like Exeter Aldershyte and Oxford  too!

It's not even that many years ago that we had a convoy of fans to "Sunny Scunny". The next URZ event after pants day, ISTR? Early 99?

Yes thanks. I remembered it after I had typed it.

My first season was in the old Division 4, so I have recalled a few games, but I cannot remember Rochdale .... probably selective memory! I can remember putting Chelsea out of the League Cup, losing to Man U in the FA Cup, playing Arsenal in the FA Cup at Elm Park (and i the Leage Cup last season), obviously Man C, Fulham, in the League. I remember Tottenham in a friendly - I think we played them in a cup match too at one stage. I remember a 3-3 draw at Elm park in the FA Cup against Newcastle - Trevor Senior ended up in goal if I recall correctly

Not at all - I was trying to work out how many of the existing Premiership teams we had played previously in some format, and when you are a lower division team the Premiership teams are the big games.
I remember going to the old Walsall ground in a blizzard and watching us lose 6-0 - we were top of the league at the time. Can't exactly call that a big game, or Trevor Senior scoring two own goals at home to bottom placed Darlington, or being 3-0 down with 21 minutes to go at home to Plymouth and winning it 4-3. Seeing Colin Clarke pull us to pieces for Bournemouth at Elm Park. And the game at Newport County when Reading set the record for the most straight wins at the start of a football season - but then again I suppose that could be called a big game, but Newport County away would not be regarded as a big game now.
I remember three FA Cup games in particular - a 6-2 win at home to Bognor, a 1-0 win at home to Wealdstone, the major highlight of that game was the punchup involving twenty players in the centre circle, and the defeat to Colchester who were then a non-league side. You cannot say I only go to the big games!

If you picked one up yesterday, have a flick through the back of the Yearbook. It includes the stats from all our previous meetings with the other Premiership teams - excepting, of course, Liverpool... I hadn't realised how many of the 'big boys' we'd played in the league before (Everton and Spurs surprised - how far back do these go?). We currently have winning league records against Charlton, Sheffield United and Watford, and we're exactly even with Blackburn, Spurs and West Ham.

We go a long way back with Spurs - we were both in the Southern League together at the beginning of the last century!

Easiest way to see our stats against other clubs (short of being Strap).

I wondered if that must be it, when I looked up Spurs' history.

...and the end of the end of the century before that.

However the other clubs we played against in the League in the 19th century have since sunk into foootball oblivion - Ilford, Chatham, Royal Ordnance, Clapton, Gravesend United, Sheppey United, Southampton, Wolverton LNWR, Northfleet, Bedminster, Royal Artillery, etc.
